By chance, I had my 2003 R/T idling for over a hour. Just idling as I was sitting in it talking with someone.
I now get 15.4 mpg over the 12.2 I got before the extended idle.
Sesqush.

Nope...I have since heard that in allowing the engine to idle for more than an hour, you reset the PCM training.

It still dosent increase your mileage.....You are burning fuel while idleing and you are not moving....IT HURTS YOUR MILEAGE...Why do you think milage drops when it gets cold??? One reason is because alot of people start their cars and let them warm up....It kills your MPG

Buck, The computer reset itself to new settings when the truck idled for an hour and now his truck gets better gas mileage. Yes, he wasted gas while idleing, but his increased mileage with the new computer settings more than made up for the wasted gas. Lets say he wasted 2 gallons of gas idleing his truck for an hour,
Before, 20 gallons x 12.2 MPG = 244 miles per tank
After, 18 gallons x 15.4 MPG = 277 Miles per tank
He wasted gas idleing, but his miles per tank of gas went up. Now he should be able to get 308 miles per 20 gallons of gas instead of 244 miles. Well, thats if the computer doesn't go back to the old settings and send him back to 12.2 MPG.

so if i let my truck idle for about an hour, the computer will reset/recalibrate itself and my mileage should be better, according to what i'm seeing here.
will it be better "forever" or only in the time period directly after the extended idle?
interesting.

Geez, before you know it, these computers will
take over everyday tasks. Come on guys, you really
think those computers are doing any thinking?
The CPU only controls what it's inputs are feeding
it. They are only as smart as the computer
programmer who developed it. They are not thinking
on there own.......... yet!

I agree with Radio, how can you guys be so sure the MPGs aren't going up just because there is small amount of gas going into the engine for a long time...It's just reading your MPGs, and if you idle your MPGs will be high.

Remember, the 4.7 trucks have a "learning computer" like Data on startrek. They learn your habits as you drive. So yes, they will eventually revert back to guzzling mode.
at this time, repeat the process (if it worked to begin with)
I'm gonna try it, good luck to the rest of you.
For those who are reluctant to try, whats the worst case scenerio?? you burn $5.00 worth of gas in the driveway?? BooHoo that's a half pack of smokes. But if it does work, you've just gained a sac of suds per fillup!! Live a little guys.

BadMoFo = DumbMoFo. The M in MPG stands for miles, and you don't cover any miles idling.

The program adjusts the injector outputs according to the averages of sensor inputs. Perhaps what has happened is that the 1-hour of idling with a rich mixture resulted in the computer adjusting the mixture leaner. The service manual and owners' manual both state (for the 2001, anyway) not to idle for an extended period of time.
