Subject: There's a bird chirping in my engine

Guys, I have what sounds like an intermitent bird chirping in my engine. It is very noticible at idle and at lower speeds (when I can hear it over the tranny whine). I shut her off and it continues a bit. I checked it out and it is coming from the fan assembly. I assume the fan blade runs on some sort of clutch since it continues to spin after the engine shuts down. I have jostled the fan and assembly and it appears real tight, but sometimes I can spin the fan blades by hand and hear said chirp. Any similar problems out there? Do you guys think it is more of a nusiance problem that I should wait on for a while since right now it is intermitent? Or is this something I should worry about right now?
Thnxs

Have you checked your sperpentine belt recently? Sounds like the belt maybe a little bit loose.

Hope this helps

Just replaced the serpentine belt with the new gator belt as I was geting some squell from my belt as it aged, the gatorbelt seemed to take care of the problem, and it is supposed to have more bite. Like I said I am pretty sure it has something to do with the fan assembly because after the car is shut off and the belt stops the noise continues as the fan slows down to a stop.

Your fan clutch may be bad. I don't think it should spin freely when the engine is off. I have to push a bit to get mine to turn and then it doesn't go more than an inch.

Maybe you really have a bird in there and should work to get it out. It's probably cruel to keep a bird in your engine compartment next to the fan.

I just went through this with my 1999 SLT with 3.9. Serpentine belt was 2 wks old and I had the same problem. THE BIG FIX ? Remove the belt and clean every pulley etc to remove any gunk etc from the surfaces. Even clen both surfaces of the belt. Use a good soap & water and a toothbrush (preferably not the one you use on your own chicklets? !! DO NOT USE ANY BELT DRESSING !! This stuff gums things up and causes more problems. Actually, using Armor All on the belt can also assist in keeping it quiet. Hope this helps and shuts that damn "chirping bird" the hell up !!

Good Luck

I have been fighting this squeak and rattle noise for a while. I just took off my serpentine belt to check the pulleys and here is what I discovered. The fan clutch appears to spin for about 5 or 6 seconds after I give it a good push. The ac pulley spins extremely free when I turn it. the power steering and alternator pulleys stop almost immediately. I am guessing the belt tensioner and the Idler(?) are gonna turn a fair amount anyway since the are not accessory related. Can anyone comment on this? I am guessing the fan clutch is the culprit and the others are behaving normally. Look forward to feedback from anybody that knows about these things.

I think the factory service manual says the fan should not rotate more than 5 complete revolutions when the engine is off. I cannot remember if that was with the clutch/engine bay warmed up or cold. I beleive cold. That is the operational check for your fan clutch IAW Chrysler factory service manual for 2001.

Water pump was changed about a year ago but that doesn't mean anything I guess. belt might be loose too because it is an aftermarket belt and it seems to really get floppy when I put a load on the engine.

Dave,
5 or 6 seconds of rotation will be alot more than 5 revolutions (I did check it when it was cold) so it looks like the fan clutch is probably shot. I do thank you for that information.

EBL' your clutch is the one that is bad, if you cant turn it by hand, it is froze up, and robbing power from your motor! The problem is probably the tensioner, mine has been doing it for 3 years now, and it never fell apart. Does it go "squeek, squeek, squeek" in about one half second intervals at idle? If so it is your tensioner, and you have nothing to worry about.

This is normal for a dakota. It is your engine ON indicator. When it stops chirping. Your engine stalled.
