I have a 99 Dakota with auto trans and 3.9 V-6. I noticed on a trip recently that at pretty much any speed, with the cruise set, the transmission seems to come in and out of converter lock-up. It does it just long enough to make the tach jump a few notches before going back down and you can feel it kind of bumping. Very annoying. This occurs on level ground. Has 32,000 miles. Sometimes it doesen't do it at all but it seems to be doing it more often as time goes on. Any ideas before i take it to the "stealership"?? I got only a few thousand miles left on the warranty.

It's gotta be the TPS (Throttle Position Sensor). It causes the rvs to drop and jump 200 - 300 all the time. Cheap part, and 10 minutes work.

Definitly the TPS had the exact thing happen to me about a month ago. I changed the Tps and its back to smooth sailing.

Goodluck.

Thanx for the tip . How much is a TPS? Does it just bolt on? I know on some cars, you have to adjust it after installing it.

The TPS is about $45.

To install it you unplug and take the two hex screws out to remove the old one. I think the new one needs gaskets on it which comes in the package. You put it on the shaft with a little angle and turn till the holes line up. It is simple and even simpler once you see it. Just pay good attention to the way the old one comes of and put the new one one the same way with the gaskets.

I had the same problem. After reading the posted messages I replaced the TPS. It fixed the problem. My truck had this problem for three months. I've taken it to every shop around with no luck. I was told nothing was wrong to it's the speed sensor. I replace the speed sensor. Of course it didn't fix the problem. Thanks a lot for the messages!

I have a 2001 quad 5.9 and it does the same thing.Sometimes it does it when I'm on a 1 hour trip with the cruise on and sometimes it doesn't do it on a 1 hour trip.It is not something that happens all the time.I will buy a new TPS and try it.

After changing my TPS with a new Dodge TPS I still have the problem.I'm going to put in an after market TPS,because everyone that changed there TPS,that fixed there problem. That's what kind of luck I have. There are no returns on elec. parts at the dealer either.
