Subject: Possible to Grind Rims to make Fitment?
IP: Logged

Message:
I just bought some very nice "Rs Limited Trama" 17" rims w/ tires for $150. Only problem is they came off a 99' Ford Contour which is a 4-lug pattern car. My pattern is a 5-lug and I tried to make them fit but the rim bolt pattern is too small. I was wondering if I could grind the rim bolt pattern to make it big enough to fit my car bolt pattern? It is only a hair line off and very little grinding needs to be done. Is this normal for aftermarket rims to make them fit on cars? Also, I would like to know if I grind them and they do fit, would it be safe for me to drive? Please e-mail me or post here.

Yes, it is possible to make them fit.

It's also VERY dangerous!! I wouldn't drive around the block with them on a truck!

See if you can get an adapter plate, even those aren't a great solution but......

Question is how did you get a 4 lug to fit on a 5 lug hub. I hope you didnt jsut drill holes in the rim. What i would personally do is one of 2 things. go to a rim polishing/repair shop and see if the rim can be redrilled to your lug pattern. If it cant see if you can get adapters to switch you from a 5 lug to a 4 lug. If the drilling isnt right the wheel will wobble up and down possibly side to side and basically you either will wreck the car or break suspension parts.

I didn't get it to fit yet Rob, that is the problem I am trying to correct by grinding them. They are only a hairline off. Adapters are kinda pricey. Do you think I should just eBay them?

if they don't fit right from the gitgo they NEVER will. you as a vehicle owner that does not have access to wheel manufacturing equipement could never ever get the things to fit right. I imagine that if you are talking about grinding them you mean to go at them with a hand grinder. DUMB MOVE, there is such a thing as "circumfrential concentricity" that must be held that no way can you by hand maintain even close to tolerance. That means that if you go at it the things will be out of round. and when you mount them on your vehicle you will be complaining of vibration from all 4 wheels, as that is what you will feel. ebay the things and use the money you get for them towards wheels that are designed to fit your specific vehicle. Unless of course you have a death wish. Adaptor plates should only be used on trailer queens, I have seen them break at the drag strip, LMAO evertime I saw it 'till they were outlawed.

A guy has a four bolt wheel, and wants to make it fit on a five bolt hub ? thank God you are here to inform him, and at the same time save everyone from this total stupidity.

You are right, I must have lost my head. I have been so involved lately trying to grind a pair of flanges on these small block chevy headers to make them fit my Dakota. ( I got a kick ass deal ceramic coat top of the line, they are only off a little.)

You know aftermarket rims have like 8 holes to fit different bolt patterns. Not like stock rims that only have the correct number of holes for each bolt.
