Subject: HELP, overheating, rising gauge??
IP: Logged

Message:
Two weeks ago while driving home my temp gauge rose quite a bit so I got it home asap and figured I was low on coolant cause it leaked where the thermostat met the block like a lot of other dakotas do. So the next day I switched the thermostat and gasket and it seemed to be fine that day, but that night it started to rise again and I didnt drive it until this weekend. Once again it started to do the same again, yet the engine was cool, and it just kept climbing. Now today the engine was all the way cool (hadnt been started yet), went out and tried to start it and the second I turned the key to on the temp needle went all the way to 260 on a cold engine before it was even started, then I tried to start it and it didnt want to start, and it did a little bit but sputtered then shut off. What the heck is going on, I see no fluid leaks anywhere? It is a 99 3.9 with 37,000 miles, always babied, so what could the problem be???? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

another thing you might want to check is the temp sending unit itself. it may be bad and in turn it will tell the computer to shut the engine down to save itself. on most vehicles its screwed into the radiator. give it a shot. but check your manual for exact location.

On my 5.2 (Should be the same intake manifold but longer) There are 2 temp sending units. Both are on the front of the manifold. The two wire one is for the computer. The 1 wire one is for your gauge.

Good Luck!
