Hello -

I need some advice on the following for my 1996 Dak
4X4. The truck has a 5.2 318 and I have some
questions. I'll just list them.

• Does this motor need to be warmed up at all - it seems
that if I just get in and go everything seems to hesitate
and sputter a little bit until it warms, where as if I let the
truck warm up it runs great. Is there a reason for this?

• I checked the airfilter and it is definitly dirty - should I
replace it wit a stock filter of something else? I am not
really looking for performance gains, I just want to keep
the truck running good. Is there a good drop in filter I
can buy I should I go with stock?

• I purchased a set of 2001 16x8 wheels and tires and
while they fit on the truck there is very very little
clearance to the point that I didn't keep them installed
for fear that they might rub. They also sat very close to
the quarters - I didn't even have enough room to slide
my finger through. It seemed the problem could be
rectified if I had a little more height to the truck under
the wheel wells. Can this be accomplished by simply
putting different shocks on the truck? I only need about
another 2 inches in ride height.

• Should I replace the stock the plugs and wires with
aftermarket ones? Will this make a difference and is this
nessary - also should I run some fuel injector cleaner
through it?

Any help would be greatly appreciated as I really love
my truck and just want to keep it running great. Right
now it 104,000 and I would like to keep it going as long
as possible as the truck is in great shape.

thanks very much in advance.

Mike

question 1-no ,you should be able to go without warming it up

2 - go with stock and save some money, when they are dirty ,change them

3-i don,t know what the problem would be,but they
should work fine on a 4x4,i had 31x10.50x15s on my 88 4x4 stock plenty of room.how big are you tires? 30 inches tall should work no problem.

4-replace your plugs, wires and dist cap and rotor button, fuel filter.try a bottle of fuel inj.cleaner cant hurt.

this may help when its cold.

Fuel-injected, computer-controlled engines typically do not have a problem running well right from startup, but it's a good idea to give it a few seconds, just to get the oil pressure up. Still, if it stutters, it's trying to tell you something. As mentioned, do a good tune-up. Stock is fine, but hi-quality aftermarket parts tend to hold up better. Well-insulated 8mm sparkplug wires resist arcing and high temp damage. Sounds like you got wheels with the wrong backspacing.

As far as the air filter goes I replaced my stock filter with a k&n filtercharger. Saw a decent improvement in both hp and fuel milage. It does cost around $100 though. But hey it does have a lifetime warranty so I guess if you figure it up it would be cheaper. I also have noticed with the onslaught of cold weather my 95 v6 does run better if it runs for a couple of minutes, but I do have a carb though.

response to vern's question 1 response, the motor should always be warmed up there are several tight tolerance in a motor! they are not calculated with the motor cold they are calculated with the motor at operating temperature hence the term OPERATING TEMPERATURE. thermal coefficiency of the different types of materials and the rate at which they expand and contract is all based on temp. the heated air routed from the exhaust manifold jacket to the intake will warm the motor the carb with the auto choke will make the engine fall on its face till it heats up hope this helps

Don't forget to put in a new PCV valve. Very Important. It fits in the valve cover.

Actually, the warm air from the exhaust jacket provides warm air to get fuel to evaporate better, thus making the engine run better when it's cold. This, in turn, does help the engine warm up. Your main intake heating takes place with the exhaust crossover, then coolant flow, and oil splashing on the underside. Once the intake is warm, this exhaust jacket valve shuts off. This underscores the main issue with carburetors. Cold starting and running isn't the best. This is why fuel injected engines run well. The fuel doesn't have to evaporate into a fuel/air mixture before entering the cylinders. Even with the old single point injectors, you still had a computer compensating for fuel pooling, and still there were 1 or 2 injectors spraying a fine mist. Modern Mopar engines no longer have exhaust crossover passages since, with MPI, it's not needed. Ideally, one should wait for operating temp to be reached for minimum wear, as azdak stated.. If you're unwilling to wait, at least let the oil pressure get up there. That only takes a few seconds, and take it easy the first few miles if possible.
