Subject: The right choice?

I'm going to be purchasing my first vehicle very soon. I'll be turning 16. I'm looking at a Dodge Dakota or Toyota Tacoma. I like the looks of the Dakota Sport. My dad has had tacomas,so we know that they hold up well. They are very hard to find with what I'm wanting (V6,auto,green color). There seem to be more Dodges that are automatic. I'll be towing a bass boat from time to time so I'll defidnetly need at least a V6. I'm trying to get something under $10,000.lol If you can give me some tips about Dodges and your opinion for my sistuation it would be appriciated. I'm also looking for pictures of a Sport Dakota (reg cab). Thanks!

You might get by pulling jet skis, but a bass boat may be too much for a V-6, unless you live on very flat terrain. Grab a Dak catalog from a Dodge dealer, or www.dodge.com, and check the towing specs. V-8 Daks are an issue with some insurance companies. If your particular insuror doesn't penalize you for the V-8, the engine choice may be well worth it. The mpg difference is very slight, or in hilly country, the same as a V-6. GenIII body style (current) started in 1997, but if you look hard enough, there are some nice GenII bargains. '92-'93's had some paint problems, but stronger 5.2 V-8's. Air bags and door braces came out in 1994. Those were reliable trucks and very easy to work on. Great starter vehicle. The price on 3-4 year old Daks are a bargain for what they are, too. The number one automotive financial issue for a 16 year old is insurance, so shop and ask around.

Don't worry too much about the towing....I have a 95 CC 4X4 with the 3.9 and I tow a car around on a trailer every now and then. I figure it's about 4000 lbs total. Does it slow me down? Yep! Do I care? Nope!

I bought a 2000 Sport last year for $9800. V6 2WD auto. They are out there for a good price. Depends on what you want, mine has no options, don't need them.

Madam-X. If you like the Toyota, you should look for the Tacoma. The Dakota is a very nice looking truck, but you are waaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyy more likely to have problems with it when compared to the Toyota. Many people here have gotten many problem-free miles, but there are many people who have had problems. I regret buying the Dakota because I could have bought some really nice "toys" with the money I've spent on repairs. So far, I still don't have 60k on mine.

I think I'm going to try to find a Tacoma for me. I do know that foriegn vehicles hold up better than american. I am hoping to purchase something that will hold up for some years (hopefully through college). I've had a really hard time trying to find an auto v6 truck. Right now I'm all game..and probably won't get really serious about a truck until December...the next couple of weekends I have to get my hunting camp ready, so they won't be free to go on road trips for cars.
Thanks for all your help.
