I have a '99 R/T. It has been making a whinning noise... here's what I do know...

It whines as soon as I start moving and doesn't stop until the truck is completely stopped. If I put it into neutral while driving there is no change in the noise. The dealer changed the rear differential oil recently, but it made no difference.

I've read several postings about rear axle problems with the dakotas, but most seem to only be at certain speeds or when turning.

Any ideas??? Could it be the universal joint?? Brake issue??

Sound like it's time to replace the ring & pinion gears in the rear end.

Start checking the easy things first like universal joints, brakes, or axle bearings. Replacing gears or differential bearings is much harder and more expensive.

My 98 Sport did that at 80,000 kms...Turned out to be a faulty pinion bearing in the rear end, of course just outside of my warranty period!! ha, what can you do.

Got it repaired for about $750 CAN. Ugly.

Im with Dude, I have a similar whinning noise mine gets really bad every time a box full of performance goodies arrives by UPS. I figure it would cost me half of everything I own to get rid of it, maybe if I have them deliver to my job.?

Hate to say this boys, but I'm a female!! FYI I call my truck the "stud finder", although so far it's just been a "dud finder"

I wouldn't think of trying to offend any female on this site (how childish) I think it is great that if a female wants to drive a Dakota all the better. My wife wouldn't drive mine if it was the last vehicle left and she needed to go 100 mi. This is not by my choice but hers, about 18 years ago I had a elcamino and was informed at that time that "Girls dont drive trucks" she didn't have to tell me twice, since I have always had a truck.
