Subject: I've decided on a dak, now what???
IP: Logged

Message:
I've pretty much decided on buying a Dakota as my next vehicle, probably a '96 through 2000.
When looking at used Dakota's, what are some things I should check for that are specific to this model truck?
I'll be towing a 21' boat occasionally, but other than that, average daily use will be the norm.
I hope to find a club or quad cab 4wd
Any insight or advice is appreciated...

First off, hopefully you're aware that the genIII redesign was '97 on ('96 is still genII).
Just about everyone here is going to advise getting a V8, especially on a quadcab and/or 4x4. (I'm happy with the V6, but I have a CC 2x4)
Plan on at least the possibility that you'll have to do certain repairs right away (depending on the mileage and what's already been done to the truck) Things like ball joints, brake rotors, timing chain (I'm sure others will add to the list) are common problem areas for Daks.
If you do your own auto repair work you're in good shape, most of these things you can buy the parts and handle it yourself, otherwise buy something with a warranty.
If you really like the Dakota then it's worth dealing with the inherent problems that most makes/models have anyway.
Good luck!

99DAK, this reminds me or the story of a husband and wife who went to a big box store for some lumber. The husband went to look at tools and asked the wife to get the boards.

She: I need some 4 X 2's

Clerk: You mean 2 X 4's dont you?

She: Yes, I guess so.

Clerk: How long?

She: Oh we want them for a very long time because we're going to use them in our closet.

A/C drain plug on passenger side leaks, Plenum plate gasket replaced or not to add to 99DAK's list.

We just got a salvaged 2001 QC 4x4. I didn't know how I'd like the quad cab's shorter bed. But i gotta say, it is fantastic to have a 100% usable back seat and I can haul 95% of anything I would have even with the shorter bed.

The debate still rages on the 4.7 vs. 5.9. I have a 5.9 in our Quadcab. Love it. lots of power. Mileage is what I'd expect for a 5.9. It is a truck afterall.

I've been impressed with our dodge. I've read all the stuff to keep an eye out for from this site, very helpful. is the dakota perfect? no. what vehicle is tho. I've got no complaints. Have fun with your dak.

Beware of used Dakota prices. I searched for one and ended up buying new because I could get one for about the same money as used. There are still some 03 models available with rebates of $4,500. A dealer near me is offering another $500 bringing total discount to $5,000. 04 models have rebates of $2,500 and that will probably increase as sales are off pace.

I guess I should knock on wood or something. I've got a 99 xcab with 73600 miles and so far I've only put a battery in it. It's a 3/2 drop with cowl induction hood, flowmaster with duals out, (and i forgot, 3sets of rotors) other than that no problems
