Subject: TireRack.com - Good deal or not?
IP: Logged

Message:
I don't think tirerack.com is such a good deal, when you figure the added shipping (usually around $80.00) and then you still have to lug the tires someplace and pay someone to put the tires on once you get them.

If they had free shipping, then it would be a good deal. I can go down the street to Tire Kingdom or Tire America or wherever and pay close to the same price installed on most tires.

What's the big draw to buying tires online? What am I missing? Cause I need new tires soon.

I had the same question. I actually found the tires I wanted for less locally. This based on a comparison of tire cost plus shipping plus mounting/balancing vs. local cost, shipping, mounting, balancing and tax.

I've bought from them twice and shipping is usually less than 40 bucks.

Anyways, the tires plus shipping is way lower than i could find around town.
I'm talking like $100.

Just last week I called Tire Rack about tires for the wifes SUV, they would not sell me the tire I wanted because the load rating was 100 lbs. less per tire than the OEM tire. There reasoning was with all the trouble that SUV's have had with tires, they would not sell a tire rated less than than the OE.
I can understand the concern with lawsuits and such, but like I explained to the sales person the tires I wanted were still rated approx. 2800 lbs. more than the vehicles GVWR.
This led me to Discount Tire on the web, they had the same tire Delivered to my door for $8.00 less than the Rack. I priced the same tire locally and would have to pay $ 30.00 more per tire plus sales tax.($ 100. per tire delivered vs. 129.99 locally)
I know Tire Rack is a sponser of this site and I have bought tires through them in the past, but if all goes good with Discount Tire I wont go back to the Tire Police.

Discount Tire has stores all around the area I live. I have purchased tires for 3 vehicles from them. I've been happy with all purchases.

On a side note, they offer free lifetime balance and rotation (nice convenience) and free puncture fixes. If you pick up a screw a few times a year, this can pay for a tire considering many places charge $10/puncture. This service is provided for free whether you purchased your tires there or not.

For quality "high-end" tires (especially 16" tires, etc.) it is hard to beat tire rack.

I havent found a Tire Place yet that can beat the TireRack for customer service and as for not selling tires that are not recommended for your application I commend them on that. I would rather have them tell me that its not meant for my Dakota or Car and have them sell me something that might kill me or injure someone else in the process.

I can get 31x10.5 BFG A/T KO's cheaper locally than I can at tirerack + shipping. Tire rack wants 112 per tire ($448) plus $85 dollars shipping plus local mount and balance = $545 I can get the BFG's locally for $125 per tire INCLUDING mounting and balancing = $500. I saved $45 dollars NOT shopping at the tirerack.

Read very carefully, the tires were still 2800 lbs over the GVWR. Since you apparently dont know what that means, It is an acronym for Gross Vehicle Weight Rating in sixth grade terms it is the maximun loaded weight, vehicle, passengers, and payload the vehicle is designed to handle safetly.

Openyoureyes - I understand your point. However, as one who has had considerable experience with legal matters involving liability - punitive/compensatory damages and jury judgments and awards, I can tell you that Tirerack would be legally irresponsible to sell you a tire that did not meet OEM specifications.

My only question here is this: Were the tires you wish to replace an optional (larger) size than the standard tire normally provided for your year/model/make of truck? If so, what size tire came standard and what was it's load rating?

Bono - like all things, it pays to shop around, as you know. While there may be times when Tirerack can save a tire purchaser a few bucks, my guess would be that, more often than not, they can't and/or it isn't worth the hassle of getting the tires and then having to find a place that will do a good job of installing/balancing a tire they didn't sell to you.

Here is my example of Tirerack's typical "deal".

Bridgestone Revo - $105 x 4 = $420
Road Hazard for 4 tires = $50.40
UPS Ground shipping = $69

Total = $539.40 without installation/balance/stems

Or, I can go to Costco and pay $126.99 per tire, installed, balanced, stems, lifetime rotation, road hazard, etc., etc.

Total = $507.96

Even backing out Tirerack's road hazard warranty I would be paying $489.00 ($122.25/tire) for a set of 4 Revos - WITHOUT installation!!!

This is fairly typical of an internet tire deal.

When was the last time you heard of a tire dealer being sued for the tires they sold.? It would seem that if this were a common occurance every tire dealer would do the same as TR. It has the apperance of TR taking it upon themselves to police thier end of the replacement tire market, if that makes them feel good, and since it is there business that is fine. If I was getting into a dangerous situation with my choice that would be one thing, but 100 lbs per tire ?, when they are already way beyond the safety factor that is considered. I have taken my business elsewhere, and will do so in the future.

Yokko - I don't know if they sell Yokes or not. My guess is, however, that with a little "dealing" you can get your local tire shop that does to sell you a set, mounted, balanced, etc. for the same money as Tirerack, once shipping and install costs are figured in - or close enough to it that the hassle of screwing around with a shippment and hauling them to the tire shop wouldn't be worth the difference.

As for your comment about sidewall designations for treadwear, heat and load range - I'm glad you pay attention to those things - many people don't. But, I'm not sure what that has to do with this subject.

Wondering - I wouldn't know how often it happens - that isn't something that would likely catch much media attention. Frankly, I'm surprised that Discount Tire would sell a tire below OEM ratings - Walmart, Costco and others will not. Costco, in fact, has such a notice on their website.

If a tire dealer did sell and install such a tire and an accident were to ensue as a result of tire failure - in court, it would be a SLAM DUNK for the plaintiff.

Companies in business to sell a product are interested in selling the product, they aren't looking to screw over a potential customer by "policing" their product's application just for the hell of it. The reason they do so is an effort to avoid landing in court simply because some stupid sh+t doesn't have sense enough to use a little wisdom.

Unfortunately, ours is a very litigious society - 1/3rd of all the world's attorneys reside in the US. Such litigation costs American consumers hundreds of millions a year in additional product costs due to the fact companies are forever getting sued and, of course, they pass on to the consumer much/most of this cost of doing business.

What about the servicing of the tires, mounting and balancing, flat repair, periodic 5k balance and rotate, warranty?

I would rather shop around locally and deal with the local tire place because they can take care of the problem the same day, maybe in an hour or two.

Do you think you are going to get the same service from a local tire shop when they knew you bought the tires online? They'll give you the run around and think to themselves, how do you like the $50 bucks you saved not buying the tires from me. That'll teach you for taking food off my table.

C'mon, let the guy make a buck and he'll treat you right when your tire blows out or you pick up a nail. He will probably even match Tire Racks price if you haggle with them. I have done this a time or two with local shops. Get a smoking price on the tires from Joes Tires and go to Discount Tires and make him match the price. Just make sure they don't screw you by taking off the warranty or life time balance.

My latest experience goes like this, needed tires for the wifes car so I started shopping around and doing my research. WHen I finally found the tire that I wanted I went shopping and found that Tire Rack had an incredible deal on the ones that I wanted at that time, after I went to a local tire dealer adn asked how much to install and balance I was set..the tires I wanted at a very good price..even after the shipping and installation. Just for kicks I decided to call Discount Tire and see if they could make me a deal on the same tire. When he told me that they were $95 each plus tax I stopped him right there adn told him that I could get them ALOT cheaper elsewhere, he asked me from where so I told him. He then took down my phone number and told me he would call me if he could get a deal. An hour or 2 later he called me back saying that he could get all 4 tires installed, balanced, with free lifetime rotation, balancing and flat repair for $200 even. This is $50 cheaper than what I was going to do and over $200 cheaper than his original quote. These weren't cheap tires either..top of the line Yokohamas. So if you know what you want and have some time to shop the Tire Rack seems like a good deal to me, and just maybe you can use their price as a bargaining chip and get even a better deal.

I did that, made a friend at the tire store, saved over 800 bucks in the last few weeks on struts, shocks, alignments, tie rods, axle shafts, timing belts, water pumps, tires, ball joints, timing chain, strut rods, Knock that kind of money off a $4200 total repair bill,(I had 3 trucks/cars way over due for repairs) it is well worth it, he gets a lot of work for his guys and I saved over 800 just by going to the same guy at the same shop. Sure I could have saved a few on tires, but then I am sure my total bill would have been much higher.
