Subject: 88 5spd into 87 auto

I have an 87 4x4 v6 with a 998 auto. The transmission is having problems shifting and is showing a bad valve in the error codes. I just found an 88 5spd 4x4 with a v6, same set up as my truck, std cab, short bed, for $400. It has engine problems but the guy says the transmission is still good. Can I swap the 5spd into my truck. I have access to a garage and experienced help. Has anyone done this before? It would be cheaper for me to swap the trans than to have the old one replaced or fixed. I'm in college so the truck is sitting, and I have tuesdays and weekends free. So I have the time to work on it.

Should swap out. The only thing that comes to mind is the crankshaft in your engine. Typically, if the engine came with an automatic, the crank wasn't drilled for a bushing required for the stick. You'll see what I mean when you pull it apart. The shaft rides in a bushing in the end of the crank. The crank can be drilled and bushing installed, but it'd be easier to swap cranks. Just remember to lay the crank bearings out in order and swap them over too, or put in new ones.
