has anyone used the summit combination oil/tran cooler on there dakota? when you use a oil or trans cooler is your dip stick full line still accurate? or do you have to fill past the line (full mark on the dip stick)to compensate for the addition of hoses and cooler? if anyone has used this product or a similar one please let me know what you did and any good tip. thank you.

Haven't used the combo you mentioned. The oil fill line should remain accurate. What you'll need to do is fill as normal, run it a few minutes to fill the cooler and lines, re-check and top off, run some more, and check again. You should be able to estimate the overall increase in capacity and expect to fill that much more.

I run an external transmission filter on my Dak. I have it mounted higher than the transmisson, so it completely drains between startups and shutdowns. I don't fill any extra. I would check it as Gen1 states and add any if needed.

Be carefull with oil coolers. Engine oil needs to reach a certain temp to work correctly. At least 180*, and preferably 200-210*. If you have an oil cooler you really need a thermostat to control it. If you check your oil temps, you'll probably find that you don't need one.

Your best combination would be a remote filter with a sandwich type thermostat. There are fancier and more expensive ways, but this seems to be the cheapest and easiest - relativly speaking.

Be Cool makes a pretty decent remote filter assembly. And Earls makes about the best fittings and hoses. Steel braided is a pain, but looks good. Auto Fit fittings with Super Stock hose is inexpensive but highly reliable and easy to work with. You can get a good thermostat from Mike Forte's Performance Parts.

I don't know if its changed by now, but when i did my engine oil cooler, the spacer that redirected the oil flow from the block to the cooler then to the filter was not manufactured for the 4.7's, and i had to use a chevy one that came close and then modify the retaining bolt. just an FYI.
