Subject: Fuel Filter Replacement

Message:
Does anybody know of a kit or other alternative to getting rid of the "fuel filter in the tank"? I would like to change the fuel filter (and more often) but dont want to take it to the dealer. Any ideas or solutions?

I think that you are stuck with the design. If you remove, and do not replace, the filter on the bottom of the fuel pump module, you risk damaging the fuel pump. How much risk is hard to say because it is a 'gear-type' pump, and these are usually 'trash tolerant'.

There is no question question in my mind that you would have to put an 'in-line' filter on the discharge side of the pump, somewhere in the fuel supply line to the fuel rail.

A question about the modification you are proposing is that there is a fuel pressure regulator in the fuel pump module. I'm not sure if it would have problems with a potentially flow restriced filter on the discharge side.

Good luck.
