Subject: Which model to buy?
IP: Logged

Message:
I'm in the market for my first Dakota and would appreciate any suggestions for the best year/model/equipment for my needs. Will use primarily for commuting, carrying garden supplies, and an occasional camping trip pulling a pop-up. Since it's the family car I'd prefer the quad. I've narrowed it to the 2001 thru 2003 model years with the 4.7 auto...beyond that, I'm open to any and all suggestions. Thanks in advance.

I'd go with a 2wd slt or slt plus. Unless you need 4wd for snowy weather.

interesting choice to buy a dakota for a family car and commuter. Why are you asking other peoples opinion on what you want?

SLT for your purpose. I agree 2wd is the way to go, unless you live in super snowy conditions. I have a 2001 and it would be a fine affordable choice. I don't think there is a ton of difference in 01-03 model years. Some cosmetic differences. Just get what you like best.

I have an '03 Quad SLT 4.7 3.55 that I use for more or less the same things. The power door locks and windows make working in a family environment very easy. The four doors are a must. I did not get the overhead computer and I don't miss it. I got the front split bench and it comes in handy when we have to squeeze an extra kid in the truck. Get a spray-on bedliner. I have the HD option. Mine did not come with the trailer tow option, but that was easy to add myself. I've had no trouble towing a 2600 lbs. trailer with the 4.7 & 3.55 and 70 with the overdrive off, but I've never tried to tow it across the country at 75. So far, so good.

Sorry, also 2WD. I live in the South, snow is something you see on the Weather Channel.

4wd is not necessary unless you are planning to plow driveways. Some people around here think that 4wd means they can drive fast in snow and ice, until they try to stop or turn. Every year, when the snow first comes it is the 4x4 SUV's that are the first ones in the ditch.
