Subject: My Dodge BITES - just like most of them

Message:
I have a 95 Dakota that has allways been a pile. I absolutely regret ever buying it. Truck has 67K miles, & It has knocked and eaten oil since about 6 months old. This pile of Chrysler crap needed a new rear end at 20K, a Catalyetic converter at 22K AND at 51K, has had the timing chain, gears, & tensioner replaced at 34k, Master computer module at 53K, radiator at 61K. Whe new it needed the airbag replaced 3 times. Crank angle sensor failed and stranded me when truck was 3 months old. Cab leaks water, nobody can locate source. Yes These are fine Chrysler quality products. I know mine has the manifold leak but I plan to dump it or hopefilly a garbage truck will hit it & total the P.O.S. The answer is to buy anything but a Dodge. I had a little 1986 Mazda B2000 that I put 134K on with NO problems. This is the way vehicles should be. Many Dodge Ram/Dakota lovers seem to think that having to work/repair their NEW truck is "cool" "ok" & "Normal" . Good lord! Don't people have things that REALLY need fixing? If I spend hard cash on a new rig I am doing so because I am tired of fixing my old one!
I will buy the F150 this time. I know there are at least fewer lemons made by them.

Chuck

I feel your pain man! I think I dumped almost 5 grand into my lemon customizing it and now everything is crapping out on me. I still am a dodge guy 4 ever thats why I think I'm gonna get the SRT-4 that comes stock 14 flat in the quarter and looks good doing it. Plus I can add a stage one and a few other goodies and be in the 13's easy! That and man do I like the noise them cars make with the Mopar blow off valves in em. The funny thing is I'll sell this truck and be where I was at money wise with this SRT-4. Sorry just venting!

Chuck, I feel your pain. I've got a '98 that has 56k miles and I've have to replace the brake rotors before 30k, I've just spend $900 replacing the ball joints and I've had to have the transfer case rebuilt. Also, the rear end is getting a little noisy, so I don't know how much longer the diff is going to last. It makes me sick that I've had to spend over 2k repairing this thing that could have went to toys. They say if you take care of your vehicle, it will take care of you. I guess that's not always true. I'm stuck with this thing for about another year. You can bet my next truck won't be a Dodge. I'm looking at the F-150s too. Every Ford I've owned has lasted over 100K miles.

Have yet to have a serious problem with mine. The only problem was when I installed the PCM and needed to get my VIN and mileage programmed in, and that isn't even a problem. Other than that, it has yet to be in the shop. The gas mileage is kicking my arse though, so I might dump it for an SRT-4. :(

you just have to except the fact that dodge's warp rotor like crazy, other than that, not a single prob up to 219,000KM. That when i put in the new motor. If I could learn to leave it alone it would probably never have broken at all

HEY Manuel, If you paid $900.00 to have ball joints replaced, then you deserve to end up with a ford. Every ford I have owned was a pile.

I have 42K miles on mine. QC, 5.9l, 4x4. Went back to the dealer twice, once for a computer reflash, and once to check seat belt bolts. The only "repair" I had to do was regrease the sway bar end bushings because they were getting noisy. Other than that I do routine maint only. Ball joints and brakes are just fine. Runs like a dream.

Mine too!

2001 Quad Sport Plus, 4.7, 5-spd manual, 3.55 LSD, H.D. Service group, tow group.

Since new - Heater on floor setting does not put hot air at floor, out the defrost vents at windshield (NHST lists a TSB for this, but am sure dealer will charge a fortune to reprogram the controller).

300 miles - Left motor mount not bolted to the block.

30,000 miles - Right front wheelbearing (2wd, sealed bearing) starts leaking grease. Dealer replaces under warranty.

32,000 miles - Limited slip clutches getting noisey in tight turns. Change lubricant and LSD friction modifer, cleaning the grey clutch residue from case while doing so.

50,000 miles - Transmission input bearing is noisy and front transmission seal leaking. Dealer says 3rd and 5th gears shot (this with no towing, heavy loads or racing). Replaces transmission under my expensive 6/72,000 extended warranty and charges me $100 deductible.

65,000 miles - Will not start without long period of cranking. "Chugs" with low idle and attempts to die after starting. Fast idle jumps way up then "bounces" the RPM as it comes to normal idle when it does start without chugging. Delaer flashes the PCM for a "TSB" and charges me $137.00 as it is an "adjustment" and neither the emissions or my extended powertrain warranties cover "adjustments". Problem still exists next day. Flash fixes nothing.

Battery does not pass draw check (heavy-duty battery and alternator, 136A). I replace the battery (once again, not covered under extended powertrain warranty) for $87.00 with same battery from dealer that has a 5-year warranty (why did the original battery not have a 5-year warranty?).

I really don't expect my truck to last past 100,000 miles. My 1983 Nissan Datsun 280ZX now has 235,000 miles on it and runs great... Say what you want about Japanese cars... I love my Z... But I fear my Dak is starting to let me down.

I see brake rotors being mentioned a lot. Hey, unless you get some sort of HD option, or are in on a high end performance model, hard braking will warp the rotors. It doesn't matter which company you buy the car from. The Neon SRT has 1" thick rotors to combat this. I'm sure the 'Vette and Viper are less prone to this as well. So far, I haven't met a rotor yet that I can't warp.....much to my disappointment.

to all the people who are posting the problems, you don't take care of the truck. i have my dads old truck with 230,364mi, its the 3rd tanny and 2nd engine. the reason why is because he treated it like crap. vehicles aren't made to be started up and driven right away. don't put in to the floor all the time! if you take care of your car, it will take care of you. that is true, but if your ignore the maintinenece and checkups then it will treat you like crap. every since i got it from my dad, i have taken care of it and it works fine. parts are goin to wear out, if you know how an engine owrks you know what im talking about.

I think we are comparing apples to oranges here.
The quality of Dodges has improved ten fold since Diamler bought Chrystler. The ones prior to that acquisition, I have heard, had a lot of problems. The ones since, like mine, has had no problems.

>>>to all the people who are posting the problems, you don't take care of the truck.<<<

I have to politely disagree with this statement.
I have had all three of the style generations of Dakota, and this third one has broken me of ever having another Chrysler product. As I read over this board more and more, I come to realize that I am not alone, either.

My first Dakota was no prize, an 88, but it was OK. I felt that it had more problems than it should have, but I was very well taken care of by the dealer. So I got a 93, five years later.

I drove it for almost 10 years and up to 170k miles with only an exploded radiator and a broken exhaust manifold bolt. Other than tune ups and a U-joint near the end, it was an amazing truck. I loved it.

Granted, there are those out there who will not maintain a vehicle and then get mad when it breaks down. But I didn't get 170k out of the last one by neglecting or abusing it, as the same dealer is now accussing me of this "new" one.

With so many problems in so short a time, it's absolutely fascinating and unbelievable that the dealer, Chrysler Customer Don't-Care staff, and everyone in general involved can be so apathetic and have such an attitude.

There are those who are probably going to disagree, and that's fine, but I think that the quality has gone into the trash can since Daimler got their greedy hands on Chrysler Corp.

I sorely regret buying this truck, and although it may upset some people, when I get time I will compile a list of all of the things that have been wrong with my 2002.

I simply want to see how many others have had the same trauma inflicted upon them because they did what I did...bought a new truck.

I don't think that asking others on this site about their experience with their trucks will give you a representative sample from which you can draw a conclussion about whether the product is crap or not. I think that 'most' people come to this site with truck problems trying to find solutions without having to go to a shop. Consequently, the sample is biased towards problems; looking at the posts it is about 80% problem vice 20% non-problem. A better way to get an assessment is to ask owners about their experiences in store parking lots, etc. So far my experience with this method is 75% favorable vice 25% unfavorable, but my sample size (4) is too small to draw a conclussion from. You need to ask a random sample of about 30 owners before you can draw a conclussion.

I hope you can get your trucks problems worked out.
