Edmunds has received the standard press pics for the new Durango. Yikes. If the new Dakota looks remotely like this Caravango, you may not want to look.

I really hope it changes a lot before the daks looks like that. Otherwise I think their sales are going to plumit. Why would they release somthing that looks that wimpy, when everyone else is going for bolder and bigger? Do they think that their going to start a new trend like they did with "The New Dodge"??? The Big rig truck look worked for one reason, it didn't scream wimp, and look like a minivan. This will be a really big dissapointment for me if our trucks evolve into this. It's almost as bad as the muscle car era dying all over again...

That's a good question.
Buyers of higher end trucks tend to be over 30, married, somewhat affluent and have a need for a truck with a big engine such as towing a boat or a large trailer.
While there exists a myth that only young people enjoy performance, todays youth are sadly mistaken in believing that if it farts loudly and has a big wing it's a performance vehicle. Also, most young buyers can't even afford the carb spacer on their old GenI Daks let alone a brand new loaded Dakota.

The 04 Durangos are starting to hit the dealers now. On the Durango forums posts are starting to pop up from people that have seen it in person. Word is that they look better in person. Not quite as bad as the photos. Still a bit minivan'ish Jeep Liberty looking.

why didnt they just use the Ram and make a Durango directly off of it? I think it would have come out better that way. Then they could just have used the old durango/dakota platform for the new dakota instead of the new bigger platform.

Because if they made the Durango off the Ram 1500 platform, the Dakota would no longer exist (as the Durango/Dakota platforms are linked). Two truck using the same platform would be stupid, and each would cut into the others market share...

Not that I want to rain on anyones parade here or trying to be an ass, but I am a young person and if there is one thing I hate it is a car with a big wing and a fart cannon. At the moment I am driving a 91 Dakota with a 318 in it. Only reason I got the 8 was for the power that it puts out.

Since nobody here has ever seen the next gen Dak, except for pics of the new Durango and a few "renderings", y'all should just shut the fcuk up until you have a good idea what it is you're bitching about.

i just recieved a letter from daimler chrysler and they said that the dakota will still be produced in 2005 so no worries about the m80
