My 2001 Quad with 4.7L is having difficulty starting. It will crank over just fine, but is starting to take forever to fire up. Then it smells like raw gasoline when it does. One time the fast idle went to 2500 rather than 2000 and the idle "bounced" up and down in RPM's and finally settled. Sometimes it tries to start, and then struggles to run, just barely "chugging."

I went to the dealer and they charged me 138.00 for a PCM flash. They said the 80,000 warranty on emissions didn't cover "adjustments", only parts replacement, and the same goes for my 7/70,000 extended warranty (that was financed because at the time they were just offering 3/36,000).

They also told me the battery needed replaced, because it didn't pass load check. The eye is bright green.

They went on to tell me the throttle body needed cleaned. I just took the air hat off to change plugs 5,000 miles ago and it was spotless inside, I change the air filter every 7500 rather than the suggested 15,000. At this point, I paid him for the flash and told them I would take care of the throttle body and battery. The next day the problem was still there.

I have noticed that the voltmeter sometimes dips down below half-way point, but not far. I have been looking for a replacement battery, but none seem to be the dimensions of the "heavy duty" battery I got with the truck (12Lx6Wx8H case). Anyone know of a replacememnt for that sucker other than the Dodge parts house?

Have someone check the fuel pump. Check the fuel pressure for starters. Have the 2001 Dodge Dakota Sport wirh the 4.7 Magnum Quadcab. Mine did the same thing and it was a defective fuel pump.
