Took my 99 dakota in for an awfull grinding noise when making right hand turns the other day and it was discovered that one of the left side caliper bolts were broken!!! How the hell did that happen?? I don't off road or beat the truck and even if i did, i've never heard of caliper bolts breaking. Also had the left lower balljoint replaced cause it went dry and was making an awfull creaking noise. And my drivers side seat needs to be replaced for the second time. And i just got 12.8 MPG on my last tank full!! And its a V-6!!! I used to get 16-17. Someone told me it could be due to a "winter blend" of fule they use up here in NY but i can't see it causing that much of a loss. Anyone want to buy a nice truck???

Zed I can understand you being pissed, but DC doesn't make the bolts and ball joints.Your trucks gas mpg will always suffer in the winter.Zed I would like to know what winter blend is?In Ohio we have BP with ice guard (Big Deal)but you got to buy high test to get it.What is wrong with your set?I hope your dealer fixes the problems for you.

Bob-
Hey Bernd-- what is winter blend?

I'm in Rhode Island and have the same problem with the gas. As far as I know winter blend has more additives in the gas to stop it from freezing from any water in it. And what ever else they need to add. i also found it depends where you get your gas. If your buying cheap stuff like from a convience store type place it tends to give you nasty milage I tried a few tanks of winter gas at a local wholesale club and only got 14.4 mpg went back to texaco were I always go and mpg went up to 15.5. so the cheaper the gas the more crap they put in it.

Bob I would wonder about it being dry gas. I've used it in my tank before on my other truck and never saw a difference in miliage. But hey maybe thats what it is.

During the winter months, the fuel industry changes the formulation of their fuel. Since, during the colder months, you actually run richer (causing more emissions), the fuel is formulated to burn "leaner". (Really sucks on performance to boot!)

The 3.9 seems to be a bit too sensitive to things like that......i don't remember ever having a noticable drop in gas milage with my previous vehicles in the winter till i got this thing.....

Have you guys had much problems with brake wear? I have had terrible luck with the front brakes on my 97 Club Cab. I probably average about 8000 miles on a set of pads but usually the rotors have warped substantially before that so the pulsating drives me crazy. I drive about 60 miles a day roundtrip to the office in mild stop and go traffic so I don't expect to get high miles per set of pads but I have spend upwards of $1000 on just brake repairs and maintenance in the four years I've owned this truck. That is the only problem that I've had with it. I'm thinking about trading it for a 2001 Quad-cab but I'm not sure if I want the brake hassles again. Your comments are welcome.

Hey Bruce,
I got a 2001 Quad cab in Sept. Love it! Only have 4500 miles on it so far so can't say anything bad about the pads yet...I'll let you know in, hopefully, 5000 miles or so. No complaints so far though.

That's what i'm looking at doing next weekend. New Pads and Shoe (not forgetting to turn the Rotors and Drums as well).

They still have about 40% left, but I don't want to take any chances (plus...30% is considered worn-out anyway).

no no no you are all wrong!!!! the problem is not anywhere near the breaks it is the nut behind the wheel. My 97 has 72,000 mi on it and still has all the original brakes on it. You must be the guy I see around town with his brake lights on all the time.

there might be a caliper alingment problem causing the pads to stay in contact with the rotor, or if you are using a cheaper set of pads such as autozone or any of the none oem products you may go through them faster do to the fact that oem pads are of a harder compond than the aftermarket pads!
you may already know this but just thought it might help out.

That's the most absurd statement I have ever heard defending DC's use of inferior parts. They have known for many years of the problems in ball joints and brakes and still use the same crap.
