Is it worth the money? Does the bigger battery and alternator actually make a difference? Could I get better aftermarket parts cheaper? What about the engine cooling? What is that?

Well, I dont know about the engine cooling being any different, but I know it comes with a tranny cooler and a power steering cooler..(along with the bigger batt and alternator). If your truck will be doing alot of towing and hvy duty work its worth it I guess..I got me truck from dealer stock and it happened to have the pkg...If I was ordering the truck, I probably wouldnt have got the pkg, but Im happy its there..

Yeah the battery is huge! But that does not mean its worth a crap! I have the HDSG on my '97, it also came pre-equipped when I bought it. I am on my 3rd battery! 7 months after I owned it, it got so hot, the battery swelled up and died. My keyless entry wasn't working because the battery was dead, so I tried my key in the door to get in and pop the hood. Guess what, the damn door lock linkage was not connected to the lock mechanism. I ended up having to call a locksmith to jimmy the door open so I could pop the hood and jump start my truck. I limped it up to the dealership to get the battery replaced. When I told them about not being able to unlock my truck with my key, they checked it out and said they weren't going to fix it because it looked like the driver door had been jimmyed, and that was why the linkage was not connected. Man they Pissed me off. My truck would have never had to be slim jimmed had the key locks worked right the first time.
The next year, another battery died for no reason. Also, I did notice that the dealership replaced my batteries with inferior ones. I asked them about it the first time and they said it was just a new model, same stuff. The next time they told me warranty would only cover a standard replacement, but if I wanted to fork out 49.99, they would upgrade me. What a crock of shit.
I love my Dakota to death, but the dealerships suck. I hate always having to deal with those spineless snails when I am trying to buy a new vehicle, and the crooks back in the service department disgust me. The 5 times I have been up there in 4 years, it never fails. They will lie through thier teeth to get me to fork out some money for something I don't need, then they will lie about what is and isn't covered. 4 out of 5 times I have had to speak with the service manager because of crappy work, and false promises. To top it off, my tranny was slipping a little, so I had them look into it. They serviced it and billed me for 89.99. I never authorized it and my tranny was slipping. My truck was under warranty and was not even due for scheduled tranny service. I didn't pay for that shit. I know all car salesmen and repairmen are crooks, but these guys take the cake.

Anyways, bigger batteries aren't always better, but the HDSG as a whole is a good investment.
