Subject: Insurance Rates V6 vs V8

Message:
Hello all,
I am in the process of looking for a used Dakota to buy. My Parents said that they would pay for the insurance (I'm 16), but they were curious what the difference would be between a V6 and a V8. Does anyone know? Thanks to anyone in advance.

Must be nice to have parent's with money. Did they, or are they paying for the truck too?

I had both. A 2002 V6 4x4 and now a 2003 V8 4x4. The insurance did not change at all for me with my insurance company.

I had bought a V6 new in 2002 and traded it when the rates were good on a 2003 with a V8, if you can, get the V8.

Best thing to do is take the VIN number, which you can get from the dealer, for each truck, call your insurance company and they will tell you the rate for each, should be the same or very close.

It seems the penalties vary with different insurance companies. Several penalize R/T's now, but not Sports. I know one young man who bought a v-6 Dak because of a v-8 penalty. Call around the companies. I left State Farm because Farm Bureau was the same coverage and cost less. Don't make the mistake of buying a v-6 for gas mileage; the difference is nil or not at all. If you live in hilly country, the v-6 could use more gas than the v-8 (that's a 3.9 vs. 5.2 or 4.7 comparison).

I agree with 01Motorsport,

The gas mileage difference is nothing, I actually get BETTER gas mileage out of my 4.7 than I ever did with my 3.9

As far as the new 3.7 goes that is in the dakota for 2004, I could not say, maybe it does get better mileage? Haven't driven one or known anyone who has got the new 3.7 yet.

Best way to keep insurance costs down is to keep your grades up(discount for B students) and take advantage of drivers ed courses which lower insurance rates.

Oh, and don't get any tickets.

Thanks everyone for the replies, and no Hammer, my parents are not paying for the truck. I really do want a V8, and have found an 1998 RT for a good price, so I might have to go look at that. My parents were just really curious about the difference in insurance prices. I think I will take Ernie's advice and call around a little.
Thanks again for everyone's help.

I agree with PAUL its going to be more for the v8,why?..because its faster which it would be more likley to get teenagers tickets...lol...it would be like me being 16 and having a camero or mustange cobra or something and him being 16 and driving a v4 or v6 pickup...which would be paying out the a$$ on insurance?...me prolly. He's 16 insurance will be higher on the r/t than a v4 or v6.When i was 16 i had an old 67 chevy swb with a 400 hp 350 not real fast but something to start out with and i could tell the insurance company it had a v6...lol...before i turned 21 my insurance on my dakota 4.7 was $1500 ever 6 months and now its $500 insurance is still kinda high but its alot cheaper than when i was 18.if you check around you might find insurance cheaper but the r/t or 4.7 will be more.ZACH take my advice and get something used and older something that would be alittle cheaper one you and your insurance prices like maybe the 98 r/t,when i was 16 i got an old pickup still have it today 5 motor in it..only thing i could afford, but my payments on my 2001 dakota 4.7 cc are pretty high and i'm paying by the month.

I'm not an expert, but the bigger difference is whether or not it is a 4wd. If it is, then they consider it an off road vehicle. But it sounds like you're not getting a 4wd. An rt will of course be a little higher than a sport with a v8. But if I were you, i would get a vehicle that I don't need full coverage on. Because you can be listed as a driver on little beater, but still be covered on all the cars on the policy. Do you get what I'm sayin'? Buy a 200 dollar car, and the rt. But don't be listed as the primary driver on the RT, just put yourself on the little beater that you don't ever have to drive. That'd be the cheapest way for you, a 16 year old, to insure an RT.

I back in my last post i was saying what i drove when i was 16 it was a 67 chevy swb,but i also had a 97 nissan 4x4 they wouldn't let me put the nissan on as the primary driver, but then again if you look around...maybe...just maybe they would be some insurance company that would.

Well, I am definatly going to have to go with the V8, I test drove a 2002 V6 manual, and that just wont work for me :). I wont be buying a second cheap car because I will most likely be registered under my parents cars anyway, and the Dakota would be a 3rd vehicle.
