I've been "offered" an extended warranty for my '03 Dakota Quad cab (by DC) for what I guess is the regular price. Should I go for it? Has anyone ever collected on one of these extended warranties or do they always do the "oops, that part is not covered for that failure mode, sorry" routine? I am a bit suspicious.

I worked at a dealership for 12 years and sold various extended warranties. There is a big mark-up in most of them and alot of the aftermarket companies will rake in all they can then go out of business or dealers won't accept them. The only extende service plan I could honestly recommend is thru the Manufacturer ie; Chrysler, Ford Motor etc: They usually cost more than aftermarket companies but they won't go out of business and leave you with a worthless piece of paper and any dealer will honor them.

I too have been pondering an extended warranty on my 02 QC, ESPECIALLY after I'v become somewhat paranoid from all the nay sayers on this site. I found this site that I thought might help you. God knows I love my dak, and always want to keep it in good shape, so I'll probably get one soon. Good luck.

got the extended DC warranty on mine when I bought it. good till 100,000, bumper to bumper, $100 deductible. I paid $800, which was $50 above the dealers cost. Compare that to the prices they were quoting you and you can see what Rob1 was saying. Is it worth it, I think so, only at cost though. Luckily, I have never had to make a claim on it, 77000 miles now. Rob1 was also right on about sticking with the manufacturers extended warranty, not off brands. Dealers might even push a "cheaper" extended warranty that wasn't "brand", but shocker, the dealer is making more money on the sign up so no wonder they push it. Good luck.

I bought the 7 year, 75,000 mi. extended warranty when I bought my '98 Dak. I had the belly pan gasket replaced and the rear completely rebuilt (gears, bearings, seals, etc.)and an oxygen sensor replaced after the standard warranty ran out. In my case, it more than paid for itself. I have 62,000 mi. on it now and I'm waiting for the ball joints to go so they can pay for them as well.

I always pass on the extended warranties. I just don't see them as cost effective. Really now, if you have more than $1,000 in unforseen costs the first 100K of a vehicles life, the vehicle is probably not well made in the first place. I've had 3 Dodge trucks make it to 200K miles for less than $1,000 out of my pocket, so why would I give in to the dealer's "scare tactic" and buy an extended warranty. Consider this: one minute they try to sell you a long-lasting, reliable vehicle, and then the next tell you to be ready for major breakdowns! It's all about money: in THEIR pocket. Another funny thing; Chrysler pulled out of bankruptcy in 1982 by selling vehicles with 5 year/50,000 warranties. My '92 Dak had 7yr/70K. Supposedly vehicles have improved since then, but most of the manufacturers offer pitiful 36K warranties. Run with the 7/70 D-C gives you and invest the warranty cost for a rainy day. If you haven't had problems by 70K, you're in good shape anyway. I had to consider this issue with my 2001 Dak that was purchased in Sept.'01. It came with a 3yr/36K, the 7yr/100K started two weeks after I bought it. To date, the total warranty work has been a windshield (1K), fog light (1K), and the only potential other item was a passenger side airbag switch, $113 parts and labor. So I've made it to 63K, and my "extended warranty" so far has cost $113. Faith or fear; take your pick.

Buying an extended warranty is alot like buying life insurance. You don't ever want to see your family collect but it is there if something unforseen happens. One trip to the dealer will usually get your money back if it is a serios problem$$$$$$$$
