Subject: Ticking sound getting louder!

Message:
OK well the ticking is getting louder. Heres the symptoms.....
It gets more noticeable as the engine heats up...

It also ticks with engine RPM...

It stops when I completely stop the truck and let it idle.....

Coming from the right side of the engine, can't tell exactly where because when I stop it goes away...

I can't get it to tick nearly as loud like when I'm driving it....

I tried the stethescope thing and the tick sounds like injector number one but I'm not sure! I was thinking about disconnecting the switch part of the number one injector but don't know if ill mess stuff up or not!

Could it also be a lifter causing that noise. Has anyone ever experienced this before. I'm thinking about just calling KRC and gettin me a crate motor! That'll solve everything!

thanks

Are you sure it is not spark knock you are hearing. This is caused by detonation or perhaps the belly pan gasket is bad. Has it been using oil? If so take a flashlite and look down the throat of you throttle body and if it is wet inside you intake the gasket is bad Might try the Autolite 3923 plugs as well. They are a degree or so colder plug and aren't as prone to cause detonation. Put them in my truck and it smoothed it right out.

I have the 3923's in right now! I also have an M-1 so it's not the belly pan gasket.

I'll look tomorrow and see if it is wet or not! A gasket leak would cause this ticking noise? I don't know enough about motors to diagnose it thats why I'm here trying to find out.

It does also seem to rev really high when I start it up but it sounds like an exhaust leak or an air leak of some sort that goes away when the idle comes down! I'm gonna check the intake tomorrow also.

I had the same problem on my 99 R/T. It ended up to be a header leak due to a bad gasket. The ticking sound was actually exhaust being jetted out between the exhaust manifold. At idle everything appeared fine but as the rpm’s went up it got louder due to the increase in engine pressure. If I had to guess that would be your problem. It’s a pain in the a$$ to replace the header gaskets but well worth it to have a strong running truck again.
Good luck,
Bill

Thanks bill! I did try to tighten the bolts down and still the same. I'm gonna go get new gaskets and try that! I wanna try the simple stuff first before I go tearing into the motor.

Check easy stuff first. If it's not exhaust, check the spark plugs, maybe the copper ring gasket is off a spark plug or one is loose. If not plugs, pull the valve cover and check the lifters (this can get bad). With motor at an idle place you gloved hand on the rockers one at a time. If the noise stops, you have a lifter bad. Next a compression test if no rocker problem. Further testing would be rod bearings. Check the above and let us know what you find. Maybe someone else may suggest some more tests. Good luck.

Hey Deep with that lifter check (I know this is a stupid question) it isnt gonna hurt anything by having the valve cover off with the motor running. Well I'm gonna check that now!

OK now this is really weird! I took the passenger side valve cover offand started it up and when i went to check the rockers there wasn't any tick sound. I'm gonna try once more and see if it is still gone then I'm gonna try putting my old valve cover on and see if it still does it!

OK forget the last post! It is still there.
I tried pushing on the rocker arms but I couldn't tell any difference. Friggen oil was splattering everywhere!

I guess I'm gonna take it and have the compression checked on it now along with stopping by and getting new plugs!

Sorry about the oil mess, but there's not to many other ways to check. If it's a lifter click it will stop with your hand on there. With any luck it's just a spark plug gasket gone bad. I dropped my oil pump on the way to work today so I know how you feel. There is one thing you might check, be sure the AC compressor isn't running. They can make a lot of noise that can be hard to find.Good luck.

Deep purple where is the spark plug gasket at? On the plug itself? Thanks for all the help by the way!
