Subject: Winter Tires
IP: Logged

Message:
I need help picking tires for winter. Here's the scoop:

I currently have the stock Goodyear Eagle LS tires, but I don't know how they fare in winter weather. I don't have much money to spend, so my debate is whether to get snow tires, or all terrain tires I can keep on in the summer.

So the questions:
1. How do the Eagle LS tires do in the winter.
2. How do all-terrain tires, say wranglers, perform in the winter, am I better off with snow tires?
3. Which specific tires would you recommend?

Thanks in advance for any advice you can give me.

How wide are your stock tires ? I plow with BFGoodrich AT 235 75r15's on swap meet rims for the winter, can't say enough good things about this set up. Wide tires on snow is not the way to go.

My current tires are 255 65 R15's. The tread must be 9 or 10 inches wide. They also have fairly rounded shoulders, I have heard you need sharp shoulders on the tire to cut into snow.

Thats too wide for any serious snow duty - use narrower tires with an agressive tread if you really want to go in snow.

My last truck had the same size tires kowalski described and made a huge difference over the summer,(street tires) I ran. (295/55/15 - Summer)
(235/75/15 - Winter).
Once in a while I would mis-judge the end of winter in anticipation of getting those tall skinny tires off my rig and get caught with the street tires on, kind of scary actually.
Get good snow tires if you can afford it and save up for some summer tires and alternate them. You will be glad you did.

My last set of snow tires saw 9 winters. They were studded when I bought them and on the ware bars when I finally sold the truck...you will get your moneys worth.
