I don't know what your talking about in the first part of your post, but if in the second part you mean UNIVERSAL joint, there shouldn't be any play. Is this what you wanted to know or did I not get the second part of your post either? And please don't be afraid to type whole words.

The play in the driveline is normal. When you turn the wheel back and forth you are not only checking the u-joints, you are checking the rear end, the transfer case, and the tranny. To check the u-joint crawl under the truck and shake the driveshaft up and down and side to side with the truck on the ground. There should be no play

ok i ordered kuhmo exctas
waited 4 days . tire shop fitted kuhmo venturas
when i told him i specified exctas he gave me all
this bull that they dont make exctas in 255/65/16
so after much discussion i got my eagle l/s
back on and my 100$ deposit back
total waste of time

what i wanted to know is should there be any
play between the drive shaft and the rear end.
when it was on the jack at the tire place
i turned the wheel back then forward there seemed to be slack or [lash] in the universal joint. just trying to eliminate vibes from rear
end whilst driving hate to think it migt be the
differential

No, there should be no play between the rear wheels and the drive shaft. It is either the rearend wearing out, or the universal joint going bad. If it is the rearend, it probably won't break anytime soon unless its really bad, if it is the universal joint I would fix it soon.

Yes there will be some play between the rearend and the driveshaft...It should not be excessive but there is some play. This is a result of the Ring and pinion gears. If set up correctly they will have a little slack in them. Also the spider gears will create a little slack.
