Subject: 4 cyl. Dak

Message:
Hey guys, I just recently bought a 98 Dakota Sport 2.5L...now I've read all the crap thats been said about the 4 cyl. Dak, so please spare me. It's my first manual...not to mention first car of my own. Anyway, I was wondering what kind of mods can be made to a 4cyl. that wont slow it down...maybe even give it more power? Also, I have to replace the cat converter...are there any specific kinds that give better performance than others? Thanks

start with an intake, either buy one or make your own, maybe an exhaust (depends if you like the sound of a 4cyl)

thermostat, pullies etc.

New gears in the differential. Multiply the torque that your engine produces.

That will probably help the most if you have 3.21s.

Okay. Heres the stuff. I have the same 4cyl Dak. There are several things that I have found to increase my ponies. You can get stuff like MSD6A or 6AL, you can get new and better wires like Accel Spiral Core, or MSD, you can get new exhaust, (Flowmaster sounds nice) You can either make a cold air intake or buy one. I think you can buy one but I'm not sure where. You can get a hold of the MOPAR Magnum Engine book. This has helped in a few areas, such as what cams you can get. You can put a 180 thermostat in. This will help you keep your engine a little cooler, after Modding. You can also get a Jet chip, stage one or two from numerous web sites. I have heard a bunch of arguments on this one though. Most people agree that after a little while of use (it's not instantanious)with the correct fuel it helps considerably. Also somthing that I found out that will help in the Future. We have the same 2.5L as the Jeep 2.5L. So that meen that if you can't find parts specified for your truck, to look under Jeep. I found a couple of neat Supercharger kits that would be nice if I had about $4 grand to spare. That also means that we can bold up the 4.0L Jeep TB to ours. I know they make header kits for the 2.5L Jeep but I don't know if they would fit in our truck, you should ask the exhaust shop you're going to. If all else fails my friend here in AZ has a 2.5L turbo engine in his Shelby Charger, that I have heard will bolt up pretty well. put's out around 300hp, and his tranny just blew. He says he'll let me have it when he gets back from Iraq. If I dont throw it in my truck, or try to use the Turbo and Manifold I will most likely build a rail around it. Hope I could help, cause I couldn't find that much on a site where double the engine rules. If you want to talk in depth about some of the installs or where to get parts you can e-mail me -> JustinHinton@hotmail.com

Paul, I live in Canyon Country, California..if you did own this truck then I have a bone or two to pick with you. As it turns out, whoever owned it before me put an after-market cat converter into it...which messed up the exhaust and the muffler which all need to be replaced now. Along with the converter. And NONE of it is under warranty. So I'm looking at paying $1600 dollars out of my pocket if I cant get the dealer to fix it for me or take the thing back. Needless to say, I'm a little peeved. >:(
By the way the truck is black and has that religious fish symbol on the back end.

Why in god's name would you spend $1600 for the factory to fix your exhaust? When you can get better after market flomaster cat and muffler installed for about $400 bucks?
