Subject: 135mph - No More Gear
IP: Logged

Message:
The speedometer on my truck just read 135mph with the trans in OD and it was redlined on I-80. I guess my dakota will never take a newer camaro or vette no matter what I do to the engine.

lol... after you hit 135 on the speedo, did you notice if your RPMS were still increasing or stopped also?

I really wish I had the tailgate down. That would have made quite a difference. I remember a few years ago I topped it out on I-81 in virginia and it wouldn't budge over 122. I assume at this point there's no speed limiter. If there's a rpm limiter I'm not sure. I was really trying to keep my eyes on the road mostly. I was also checking my temp gauge. 114k miles on the engine and who knows how its goign to react. I wasnt actually doing 135 because I changed the gears in the rear and the speedometer has always been a little off. Being a Gen II that thing is like a brick wall. Having the tailgate down would have given me at least another 5 and more than likely 10. Maybe in a few more years I'll try it again. This isnt something I do on a normal basis.

Originally I had 215/75/15 which I changed to 275/60/15. I believe they are very close to the same height so no change there. The ring and pinion is a different story. Originally I had 3.50 and when I put the LSD in, I found that they were worn. Instead of putting the same worn gears in and have to redo the whole thing, I opted for 3.92's. My assumption is that my top speed is still around 122 with the tailgate up. There's so much wind resistance that it just wont push any faster. As for being limited by the computer, the truck thought it was doing 135ish. I couldn't be precise with that because the speedometer only goes up to 125. My friend in a Mercury Merauder said he was doing about 120. He was in front of me and I was gaining on him slightly.

Mark,

That truck at that speed is a death trap. Bad enough fighting to race you into the office garage some mornings. Question: Which one of us raises the middle finger the fastest. Ha Ha

As to speed, an engineer friend of mine stated that the cut off for ALL vehicles is 135 mph. There is a multiplier effect for every mph above that. This conversation came up when we were talking aerodynamics and drag coefficients. He said that automakers talking these terms were blowing smoke up our _____ (noses, ha ha).

Feel free to correct me if I am wrong.

The tailgate lowering trick is another story.

Amsoil Synthetic Motor Oil ??? Sorry that ain't gonna help your top end either.

thats, not true. While my truck is 110 mph, my parents LS1 "was" 151 mph... factory set

now, if you were talking about wind resistance, you are still wrong. Been over 170 mph in that car (400+ hp and 2.73 gears do the trick, dont believe me, buy one and mod it like ours and find out for yourself) And a stock Camaro will go 150 without trouble. Heck, i think the SRT-4 went 148 before it was computer controlled.

Hey Steven, governors are manufacturer specific. They base the max speed off the capabilities of the chassis and use the tires that it comes with to set a speed. My 91 SHO had no such governor, had it up to 140 with a good bit of room left. Very dangerous I know, but what can you do. I wish my Dak didn't have a governor but that 115 kill keeps me out of a LOT of trouble.

I thought that changing the gears doesn't change the speedo, at least on a gen 3, only the tire circumference change will throw the speedo off. The puter knows how fast your going and the speedo reads correct.

I've also read wind tunnel studies, that actually is worse with the tailgate down, not faster.

Go figure

I meant for my comments to be read as follows:

For every MPH over 135 it takes more energy to produce "each" and every 1 MPH than the energy needed to get "each" and every MPH getting up to 135 MPH.

At 135 MPH vehicles begin to "push" the air, and aerodynamics are important only AFTER you reach that speed. I was referring to aerodynamics and drag coefficients.

Do I make sense now? Or not?

I was not talking about maximum MPH or govenors.

I have a '93. Its dumb... just the way I like it!

I cen tell the difference at 80mph whether the tailgate is up or down. It creates so much drag that I get better mph as well with it down. as much as 5-10%

I have been bad again.... I just took a brand new maxima. I was impressed. very close race. I have a better 0-60 time but beyond 60 we were equal in speed up to about 90. He cut out first! haha

Actually Steven, Air drag begins to take over around 45 mph, that's when the drag on the body of the car is greater than the rolling friction of the tires. So the statement of 135mph is really high. I have heard the statement that a spoiler does no good on a vehicle until 120 mph. That is does not create downforce until that speed, but the front of the car is affected by wind resistance very early on. Just hold your hand out the window from 45 to 100 or whatever. It should be obvious.

This varies from car to car of course, each car has a different coefficient of drag. The Dakotas unfortunately is very high. Its based on frontal area, and we have plenty of that.

FYI--the tailgate thing is entirely different between a genII and a genIII truck--GenIII was designed with a little more science in mind, so the tailgate has less of an effect than on a genII like Marks.

Well, I got a '94 and it only goes to 120 MPH. The fastest I dared to take it to was 105MPH. And why not faster? I'm running recaps! If you really won't speed, then get a R/T Dakota if it dosn't have that dreeded Speed dictator! I had a '01 and I couldn't get past over 95. But, you can replace the chip with a Jet that delays.the shutoff of fuel.

But now if you really want to hang with the Cameros. I recomend a Intripd R/T. 0-60 wouldn't to close. But I herd the both can reach over 140 MPh.
