Subject: SRT/10's take on THE DRAGON
IP: Logged

Message:
The week before last, Daimler-Chrysler brought several Ram SRT/10's and a 2004 Viper to the Smoky Mountains for the motoring press to challenge the famous US129 stretch known as "The Dragon." The Deal's Gap road near the border of Tennessee and North Carolina is well known to motorcyclists from all over the world (www.dealsgap.com). 313 curves in 11 miles! I found out about this escapade from my local Dodge dealer, some of the employees were still pumped over what they saw and heard. One showed me a photo of a black SRT/10 beside their service department. D-C brought down a SRT/10 prototype and some production models for the press to wring out. They also brought extra engines, transmissions and rear ends, just in case. Get this: they didn't use ANY of the spares, but came back to the dealership every morning for NEW TIRES! The SRT/10's totally conquered The Dragon without incident, but one driver overextended the Viper and tore the nose off! Speculation is that some Viper pieces will end up on the "Tree of Shame" in Deal's Gap. The guys at the dealer were all about the SRT/10's hardware; Dana 60 rear, traction bar device, handling, etc. I won't name names to protect the innocent, but you can verify all of this yourself when the magazines come out around January. The pickup truck world will never be the same...

why on earth would you want to bring trucks and vipers to the Gap? That's motorcycle territory ;-) Just look at the pics inside and take note of the cop car in the weeds, hahaha.

Have you seen the guys running it on bikes? I ran it on my Bandit 1200 this summer but some of the guys on sportbikes are just plain NUTS and back it into the turns and take the jump at "gravity curve" and jump to the next curve from there over the grass. Watch the bike videos and you will feel quite humble.

I hate to say it, but the only bad part of the Gap are the cages. Cars and trucks aren't tooo bad, but the tractor trailers, cars/trucks with trailers like the damn BOAT trailer when I went through last, and the busses. Oh yeah, and the damn cops, LMAO.

Great place out there and there's even more roads that are as good or better and don't have the downsides to the Gap. Did you check out 28 south? Not quite as tight as Deal's Gap but longer and TONS of fun.

I suppose D-C wanted to introduce some new roads along with the trucks. Take everything in context. It IS a public highway, and still be fun to carve up at less than "10/10ths", as the British say. I'll agree that there is no shortage of fun roads in East Tennessee and Appalachia. Try an old moonshiner's route for kicks!

Those old moonshine roads are where American Racing was born.

Junior Johnson frequented US 25E between North Carolina and Tennessee. The real "Thunder Road" ran from Harlan, Ky. to Knoxville, Tn. in the 1940's-1950's.

Truckin' magazine made it to the news stand first with the story about the SRT/10's in the Smoky Mountains: January 2004 issue. I'm sure the high school students in Blount County enjoyed the massive burnouts in their parking lot!

Here's my old post about PVO's adventure on the Deal's Gap route. There's all kinds of t-shirts, videos and other promo stuff about The Dragon/ Hwy 129 now.
