The ASP Underdrive pulleys work well on the 3.9L. (They're the same as the 5.2L) One word of caution: With the full set of pulleys, under 1000rpm the charging system doesn't work properly. Don't worry about it too much unless you're doing a lot of stop-and-go driving. (Then you just revhold it at about 1100 rpm for about 60 seconds to let the charging system catch up.)

That's with the alternator pulley. (Mine was slightly worse with only the crank pulley.)

I bought mine from Truckperformace.com for $130.
Chuck (intense99dak.com) actually kept the stock alternator pulley on and switched to a smaller 6 rib belt. I don't know what size though.

I kept the stock alternator pulley because most of my driving is stop & go in the city. It's a good thing that I did because I have the same "problem" as Bernd whereas I have to keep the idle up to maintain the charge.

I am glad that I installed the pulley (along with the fan) and am toying around with the idea of trying out the alternator pulley this spring just to see if I can feel any difference in power. I doubt it will stay on long though.

The length of the belt with just the under-drive crank pulley is 94 if memory serves me correct. I believe Goodyear Gatorback is available in that size and just about everyone carries them. I haven't heard of or seen a shorter 7 rib belt, but the 6 rib works fine.

are the gains of pulleys worth getting a set??What happens in the winter if you try to let it warm up on its own??I also have plenty of electical add-ons-amps, radar, jammer, laser, etc...seems like I wouldn't pull enough juice at idle to keep it running....

It will warm up just fine. The pulleys actually make the fan spin slower. I always saw kits with a smaller alternator pulley with them. If you got one of those, charging wouldnt be a problem, or so I assume.

Chris,

In my humble opinion, I think the pulley(s) is worth it ... especially if you combine it with an electric fan. I don't have any hard numbers to support my statement, but my "butt dyno" was impressed ;-)

I live in the Northeast and during winter months, I let my Dakota warm up at least ten minutes before driving it (only if it's been sitting overnight and what-not). When it's idling with the defroster on high, the radio on and parking lights on I notice the voltage at around 12.5 - 13 (it's hard to get an accurate number with these gauges). When I drive it, the voltage goes beyond 14.5 for a few miles before dropping back to normal. My stock battery has shown no signs of weakening (knock on wood).

There have been some people on the DML that have reported no problems using both pullies with high power stereos. Worst case scenerio is you buy a set, don't like them and then sell them on eBay and make your money back.

If memory serves me correct, the 3 pulley set includes a water pump pulley as well as a crank pulley and alternator pulley. Gen 3 Dakota owners won't be able to use the water pump pulley because DC changed the design.

I and a lot of the DML members use the ASP pulley. I really don't think there's any difference between brands except for price and maybe finish options (powdercoating, etc.)

To see a dyno graph of hp/torque gains using the under-drive crank pulley and electric fan, go to http://www.fast4x4.net/ and click on dyno graphs. The crank pulley graph is the middle top.

I ran the ASP Crank Pulley before the S/C and was very happy with it. Unfortunately, I can't run it with the S/C or I won't make the full boost. (Nothing worse than a blower not making 9# of boost). ;)

The pulley's are worth it...just watch the charging system in rush hour traffic. The worst i've ever seen the charging system operating (with the pulley) was during the rainy season with the Wipers, Defroster, Stereo, and Headlights on...in stop and go traffic. You'll be fine for normal driving though.

Hey bernd still have the pulley? I am looking at getting some when taxes come in. I can get a set of Hypertech for 120. I am also going to be adding the 16" Electric Fan. I am probably going to keep the stock alternator. So Bernd if ya still have the crank pulley let me know. Also could you send me some basic instructions of how to install them, and how long/hard it would be. Thanks.

What is the diameter of the crank pulley?, there doesn't seem to be a lot of clearance between the crank and water pump pulleys on my 98 V6 for anything larger in diameter.

Get rid of the Hypertech pulleys and put the OEM
ones back on.

You're underdriving your alternator and water pump.
That's why you're having charging and overheating
problems.
