Subject: 94 3.9L Smoked the blower....

As the title says, I was driving the down road and smelled something electrical cooking. The cabin started filling with a little bit of smoke........so I shut the whole climate control system down.

Reading through this site, I found some good info, and yes I already checked the reisitor in the firewall. :) The fan "works" on all settings, it just stinks real bad! The local Autozone has one for $31, but I can't even get to the old one! :(

Took the glove box out, and all the other stuff to get to it, took all the screws (that I could see!) out and I still can't get to the blower. Has anyone ever swapped one out?

1994 Dakota 3.9L 4x4 w/ AC 137000 miles

And of course....... I can't find the repair
manual. :(

Thank you, I appreciate the help!

Already been there and done that. Gotta drop the entire lower dash, which extends all the way across to the cover panel under the steering column.

Man, that sucks! Thank you for your answer though.

My next question, is where are the plugs for all the wires that are attached to the lower dash? And once the dash is dropped, how hard is it then to get the blower out?
Thanks again!
Jake

Best I recall, only thing wired into lower dash is the glovebox lite; it unplugs from the back once you partially drop the lower dash. You may have to wiggle around the kick panel trim, and you'll get some lite interference at the heater box (right at the flex coupling/foam rubber seal) that you'll have to pay attention to when you put it back together, or you'll have messed up heater output (direction-wise).

The ashtray must come out to pull the lower dash; and it will be much easier to pull the ashtray out of the way if you pull the instrument cluster faceplate first (the woodgrain piece). Yes, those are functional torx screws; and there's a couple of clips in there also that should pop out rather easily. Drop your tilt column down as far as possible for easiest removal (it's tight, but it will wiggle free) and be careful you don't scratch the cluster lens.

Once you get the lower dash out of the way, the blower motor is staring you in the face. Your replacement motor will likely have just pigtail wiring with no connectors, and there's a reason for that: the wiring runs BEHIND the heater plenum, and it's almost impossible to resnake the wiring back in place. Take the old motor loose, cut the harness as close to old motor as possible, and splice the new wiring to the old using crimp connectors. Wrap the whole shooting match good in electrical tape to prevent chafing, and carefully work it back behind the heater plenum.

It's gonna be a bit tricky putting the lower dash back in; there is a center lower screw that needs to go in FIRST to support the bottom of the dash. Get some help holding the dash in place until you get this first bolt back in. DO NOT put in the screws just above the glovebox first and expect the lower dash to hang by them - they'll tear through the lower dash plastic.

Just take your time, watch where everything came from, and you'll be fine.

Forgot one other connector: the ashtray lite, if so equipped.

Thank you! That was perfect, and knowing that the center bolt needs to go in first makes it much easier! Thanks again, I appreciate it!
