 Subject: What to do about that ugly a$$ tailpipe?

Hey, I'm not looking for more power, I just hate seeing that rusty looking 'ol tailpipe hanging out the back of my shiny silver dakota. Without spending much $$, is there just something shiny silver to cover that mutha up, or would I need to install a new pipe. If so, where you get shiny pipes cheap? I like shiny things. hehe

Well, you could buy a tip. You can find really cheap SHINEY ones just about anywhere. But those sometimes look pretty crappy, because fromt the rear, you can see that it is just a tip, and not a modified exhaust. But depending on how you want it to look, that could be what you want.

Is there anything longer available that will cover past the "elbow?" I looked up tips, but they're all short and fat. I'd like something long that just covers the pipe, ya know what I mean? All the tips I saw look like they belong on riced up civics.

mine is 2 1/2 , maybe yours is too, who knows go measure it, best thing to do is go to a muffler shop have them chop off that crappy tail pipe and weld in a new one, stainless steel or whatever you can afford, will look better then the rusty one, i just chopped mine after the axle anyways,

The only way to really rid yourself of that thing is to take it to an exhaust shop and haven't cut it off and weld another one in for you. I'd try for Aluminized Pipe if your shop carries it. Call around for the best price. It shouldn't cost you that much and if they're as good as my shop, won't take more the 15 minutes (that's how long it took them to cut my exhaust off, weld in a high flow cat, then weld the muffler and pipes in, then weld the hangers and tips. Looks really good, and the aluminized pipe won't rust.

aluminumize pipe,,,,,, what a joke! use stainless as that is what you already have on there . Aluminize won't last a year where they use road salt!
Those of you that think you know everything are particularly agravating to those very few of us that do.

Thanks for the input guys. I don't live where they use road salt, so thats no big deal. Sunny and warm year round. If my stock tailpipe is stainless steel now, can I get under there and polish back to be shiny? I think it sounds like I need to weld in a new pipe no matter what to make it look good.

just cut the pipe off after the muffler and put a turn-down on, that way you and no-one else can see any kind of tailpipe at all........thats how i did mine.......

You could do the turn down, but for emissions, you have to have an exhaust exit. So if you have to get emissions done, then i wouldn't just turn it down.

The pipe you have now is not stainless or it wouldn't be rusty "try this" is either messing with you or is really not the sharpest tool in the shed. If you want the pipe to look good replace it with aluminized or stainless and yes aluminized pipe will rust but it lasts alot longer than standard exhaust pipe, and is alot cheaper than stainless.

It took me a while, but I used Mothers Metal Polish and got my tailpipe as shiny as chrome. It cost all of $4.00.
