Subject: Airbag Light

I have a '98 Club cab,4x4 with a 5.2L in it. My airbag light/chime turns on and off occasionally and is getting very annoying. It seems more frequent lately. I spoke to the dealership and they say the light needs to be on to run the diagnostics. My cruise works (although the dash light burnt out) and my horn works, so I don't think its the clock spring. Has anyone else had this problem or have any recommendations?

When the light comes on your airbag isn't working. Most likely a connection on the wiring harness. Do your gauges go dead too? That's the connector fot the instrument panel. Mine did that and the dealer told me Dodge used the wrong grease on the connector.

They should be able to pull the code regardless of if the light is on or not. There are two categories for DTC's -- Active codes and Stored codes.
Having the code active will help in an accurate diagnosis.

Just to let you know if you don't already. The Clockspring in our trucks has been recalled. I'am not sure what years but i am pretty sure 98 was one the models recalled.

My gages still work when this happens. It seems to be getting worse lately, and I think it seems to be worse when I turn the wheel to the right. This leads me to believe its the clock spring. Can the airbag go out and the cruise and horn still work? It costs me $70 to have Dodge run diagnostics, so I'd like the light to be on all the time so I can get an accurate read. I checked with Dodge and they said my truck wasn't covered under the recall. It sure seems to match the problems everyone else has been having, but its not covered.

The air bag light has been staying on on my 2001 lately. The dealer diagnosed a bad passenger side air bag switch. I plan to schedule the repair soon.

JakDak, I see my problem listed there as #8, but its a service bulliten, not a recall. Dodge doesn't cover repairs under service bullitens do they? I thought those just acknowledge the problem, but leave it up to us to fix it.

I have a '01 Dakota Sport with 68000 miles. My light came on about 2 weeks ago. I now have a 400 bill for a control module. Unbelievable that the extended warranty does not cover "supplamental Restrants" but it does cover speakers. Go figure.
