Subject: New to forum. Just bought a 97 Dak 5.2

Hello all. I am new to this forum, and new to the world of Dodge Dakota trucks. I just purchased a used 1997 Dakota club-cab, 318 V8, auto, SLT loaded. 81,500 original miles.

I have a few questions. But before you flame me, I want to let you know that I have just spent 4 hours reading your archives and recent postings. I found some answers. In fact, I found too many answers, of which many conflict with each other.

My issues are as follows:

1) The transmission has a high pitched "whine" when it goes into overdrive. It only makes this noise while in overdrive. If I turn off the overdrive, the noise goes away. Any ideas or comments? Do I need to rebuild my overdrive unit?

2) I tried to adjust the timing by loosening the distributor. I should have bought a freakin manual. Yes, I now realize that the timing is not adjustable. As I turned the distributor, the timing mark on the balancer didn't move. I need to put the distributor back where it was originally. How do I do that? Does it need to go back to the dealer in order to put the distributor back to it's original position?

3) When I move the shifter from Park to Drive. It binds slightly and make a rubbing noise. Is this common? How to fix?

Thanks for your time and help. I know that a lot of you out there don't like helping "newbies", but I seem to be having trouble finding answers to my three questions.

Kind regards, ARG

Good luck with your new Dak. I can't help you on the other stuff but here's a good link on timing your motor:

For what it's worth, my 01 shifter doesn't "bind" or make any rubbing noise at all. Should be just a nice solid shift. Also, my tranny doesn't "whine" either, so both things I would say are abnormal. But, with a 6 year old truck, somethings bound to need a little fix. Prolly best to have them checked out. Just throwing in my .02.

Good luck with your truck. You'll enjoy it!

My first Dakota was a Moss Green SLT CC 318 4x4, loaded except for the skinny wheels and I added flares. The biggest regret I have is getting rid of it.

Don't worry about getting flamed...that sort of thing doesn't happen here ;<{).

1) I don't know about the OD noise. My 01 CC makes a slight whine. I wouldn't worry about it unless it's so loud it hurts to drive.

2) What Bill said for zeroing the distributor.

3) as for the shifter noise, trace like you would any other noise. It could be coming from the colum or it could be at the tranny end. It could even be the detent in the shift sector, which would mean some disassembly would be required.

Hope this helps a little.

BTW, if you have my truck can we trade?

Thanks for the info guys. I managed to fix the rubbing shifter noise with a quick squirt of WD-40 down the tube (right behind the tilt-wheel mechanism).

I want to up the line pressure on the tranny for firmer shifts. I just did a tranny service and adjusted the bands. I guess I'll have to drop the pan again :^(

Are there any instructions on this board on how/where to up the line pressure on the valve body?

So now I only have the two problems left: noisey overdrive unit and getting my distributor back where it was.

Thanks again for your help guys.

Regards, ARG

Can't help you with line pressure or distributor position but I also bought a 97 5.2 Automatic with 60,000 miles on it. It is 4x4 CC and shifted a little rough and was a little noisy when I got it and some things I did that helped were having the transmission flushed. I took it to local fast lube Citgo (dealer wanted 195.00) and they did complete flush and changed filter for 105.00. This helped good bit because it removes all the old fluid even from convertor which just dropping the pan and changing filter will not do. That leaves 4 or 5 Qts. of old fluid in trans.
I also switched the plugs to Autolite 3923's which improved throttle response, idle and now transmission downshifts smoother on upgrades.
I also had a single in dual out V-Force Performance Exhaust Installed and replaced air filter with K&N drop in along with new plug wires and switched to synthetic oil. Oh yea truck was using qt. of oil about every 6-700 miles so I ended up having to replace the belly pan gasket on intake and now doesn't use a drop.
Anyhow I highly recommend the flush for whining problem before you go to expense of rebuild.
