Subject: Which one should I buy?
IP: Logged

Message:
After having read several of the posts I believe I have come to the right spot.
I have the chance to buy a 99 Dakota R/T loaded for $15,000 or a 2000 4.7 sport with minimal options for same money. Both are club cabs.
I am thinking R/T but will it hold resale? I am in St. Louis, MO.
Thanks,
Tim
p.s. I need one of these so I can register on this forum. I can't post picture of my 91 S-10.

Both are good trucks. All other things being equal, a well-optioned vehicle will be worth more than a bare-bones version when it comes time to sell. Your question is a perfect example of that...a 99 R/T priced the same as a 2000 with minimal options. So looking strictly at resale value, the R/T will probably be worth more later on. Obviously mileage comes into play on this, as does the condition of the vehicle. You've already saved money because you let the first owner take the big hit on depriciation. But with any vehicle purchase you will lose money, so get the one you want and enjoy it.

The 99 is a dealer buy back. They said it was in reguards to the tow rating. Does anyone know anything about this?

That sounds fishy. A dealer buying back a vehicle because of the tow rating? The buyer should have known the towing capacity in the first place and it's a performance truck, you don't necessarily buy something like that for towing. The only reason I've heard of buy backs is because of mechanical type problems that couldn't be fixed permanently.

In my opinion, I'd get the R/T if the truck is in good shape, decent mileage and runs good (obviously). I agree with what Dan said.

I posted this on the R/T forum as well. A buy back usually means the factory had to buy back the Dakota from the pervious owner because it was deemed a lemon through legal action. They are required to tell the next owner it is a buy back, and they could make up whatever reason they want to, to make it sound better to you. It's just how much you trust this dealer, the price seems pretty good to me.

dodge did a buy back of a lot or R/T's because, for some reason, they can't tow what chrystler said they could. what dodge did was offer a refund for the amount of the tow package, or they would buy back the truck.
I would get the loaded R/T myself

My dealer told me about a customer who bought an RT for towing and they had to buy it back when Dodge sent a bulletin out changing the tow rating. When you think of it 3.92 / 360 it should have a good tow rating I am not sure why they had to reduce it.Maybe it is the RT special suspension.

The tow rating issue is why Dodge bought a bunch back. It was due simply to the lowered suspension of the R/T. As I recall, the R/T's were initially rated to tow somewhere around 5000-6000 pounds, due to the engine/transmission/gearing combo. This was revised to around 2000 pounds because of the lower suspension and reduced suspension travel. This revision pissed a lot of people off, which prompted the buy-back.

There ended up being a class action lawsuit too. But I think DC gave the owners 3 options. One to buy back, 2 to trade for something else, and 3 to get a bunch of certificates for Mopar Parts.. like $1500 I think.

If you really want to know, go to www.blackdakrt.com and talk to jack, he has had several and can tell you all about them.

It's true... the "buy-back" was a widespread issue, but unless towing is what you intend to do, there should be no other problems.

You might, however, insist on documentation to prove that the towing issue was the only reason for the "buy-back".

That being accomplished... BUY THE R/T. Options equal resale value, not to mention the future collectability of the R/T package.

One more thing... you're not concerned about GAS MILAGE, are you?

Those that said the buy back was for towing reasons are very close to right. Actually it was for GVWR which relates to towing and to how much you can haul in the bed. My son kept his and took the certificates (which amounted to $500). He spent the certificates on a reciever hitch. You shoulda' seen the look on the dealers face when he did that. We have hauled over 1000 lbs in the bed and pulled his Firebird on a trailer with no problems.
Those that were bought back were rerated and the stickers should have been changed to reflect the changed rating.
