I had that happen when my truck had 18,000 miles. Have to pull the tranny to fix it. It's a simple gasket to replace, but pulling the tranny is a pain. Had mine done at dealer under warranty (factory installation defect, apparently gasket was pinched.) They had the truck 5 days.

Forgot to tell you what it is. A rear main bearing seal, or rear seal as it is commonly referred to, is a big, round rubber seal between the engine and transmission.

This is a pic from a Volvo, but gives you an idea where it is.

Unless it is pukeing oil--- drive it.
Chicks dig driveway stains.

Gotta pull the transmission.

See for yourself how much it is leaking, but don't look now. When doing a LOF, the oil from the filter gets all over the side of the engine and collects at the bottom of the bellhousing so right now it will look like a big leak. Check it after driving through a good heavy rain. (after the water dries)

When asking engine related ?'s-- always list engine & year. There are 5 (soon to be 6) possibilities

some of the old ones have a 2 piece rear seal-easy

A '91--- that may be a 2 piece seal.
For those, you pull the oil pan, oil pump, and rear main bearing cap. The tricky part is getting the upper part of the seal out and in without damaging anything.

Be careful when reinstalling the oil pump, make sure you seat the pump by hand, THEN tighten bolts.

Double check on the 1 or 2 piece ? before getting out the tools..

Get some brake parts cleaner from parts store or Wall-Mart and clean off rear area of oil pan and front of bell-housing and wipe dry. Watch it for a week or so to see how much fresh oil drips back down. This will give you some idea of how bad it is leaking and if you need to fix it now or can wait but you do need to fix it because it will only get worse. Yeah it is a pretty big job. On most of them you have to pull the transmission and the oil pan and the rear main is the very last one in the back. It could be a one or two piece seal. Most likely you will have to remove the oil pump and now would be a good time to clean any sludge from it and the oil pan befor re-installing. Be careful not to damage anything when removing rear main bearing cap and pump and reseat pump gently by hand then re-install bolts and torque to specifications, same goes for bearing. Be extra careful not to get any dirt of any kind in the bottom of your engine while you have the pan off. Put it all back together and refill with new oil and filter and pray it doesn't leak.

Auto-Rx it. It works if the seal is leaking because it got crud and is dried out(not torn or ripped). Worth a shot, might save a lot of hassle. Go to their web site, follow their directions to the letter.

OK guys, I can see I'm in the dog house, but around here that's nothing new. I would try the RX- however I have already got the oil pan work NEARLY done and It has over a half inch of sludge in the bottom cause I can feel it by reaching my hand over the top. Since I have already got this far I plan to put a new high-volume oil pump on and change the rear main seal(s) and put on on a new pan gasket & redo the sleeve that didn't seal right on the damper, I will soon be a mechanic like you. LotsOL :) , Hey did check out that RX site and thanks for that INFO, P.S. I have a couple of old F-350 flat & dump beds that I use in my lawn business, one is a 72 & the other a 77 that I'm looking for parts or complete old trucks, these things seem to run forever if you take care of them.
And if you know anything about that oil pan manuver I would appreciate a hint before I tear something up. Kurt
