Subject: Differential Discrepancy

Message:
I just opened the rear differential on my 99 SLT CC 4X4 and learned that what was supposed to be (according to the sticker in the glove box) an anti spin diff was actually an open diff. If I find out that the previous owner had no differential work done to this truck, is there any course of action I can take to remedy this issue? How do I determine if it's the wrong diff or just an incorrect sticker? Can I check something in the VIN to confirm which diff it's supposed to have, or am I just screwed out of my anti-spin? Thanks for any help.

Nevermind. Upon closer inspection I could see the clutches inside there. Guess I should have looked more closely instead of trusting that "others I have seen aren't this way" attitude. Thanks.

Warden - you can always just do a burn out, and see if both tires spin, or just one. You be a bit more tire friendly, and just put one tire in the dirt, one on the pavement, and get on it and see if one or both spin too.

OK so now I know it's the correct differential , but it seems that replacing the fluid did not completely solve my problem. Just about every time I make a turn from a complete stop, i get a metal chattering or grinding type noise and it feels like I'm driving over bumps, once into the turn it clears up. It seems to have improved after changing the fluid, but hasn't gone away. any ideas? Thanks!

Did you add the friction modifier when you changed the fluid?

I can usually feel the outside tire dragging a little if I go around a sharp corner without accelerating very hard. This could be the "driving over bumps" that you mentioned. But the friction modifier should take care of the chattering sound.

I used synthetic gear oil with friction modifier in it already. I used no separate additive. It does not occur when speeding around a turn, only when I turn from a dead stop. The problem is definitely improved with the new gear oil, but still happens sometimes. The truck has 62,700 miles on it. Could it be the clutches slipping? Thanks.

I changed the fluid in the rear dif. and added NAPA friction modifier it still chattered bad until I put the Mopar additive in. Go figure
