Hey
The fuel pump in my 97 has crapped out. the truck has 38K miles on it. My local Dodge dealer wants (and is getting) $700 to replace it. My question is this: Is it common for the pumps to die with such low miles on it? And if it is, why doesn't the extended warranty cover it? It covers almost everything else, even the damn horn. Anybody ever had a similar situation? Any help appreciated.

When the fuel pump took a poop on my 92, I took it to a regular ol' neighborhood mechanic and he only wanted $180 (I brought him the new pump assembly from the Dodge parts counter). Even if the warranty doesn't cover it, that's not too bad.

I just found out that my truck's fuel pump needs to be replaced as well. 1998 Dakota Sport 4x2 club cab, only 36K miles. $500 plus $250 for labor. Haven't I dumped enough money into this thing with the regularly scheduled service? What a crock of sh*t...

I have a 93 Extended Cab that I'm pretty sure
the fuel pump went out on. I have a friend with
a Ranger that had similiar symptoms, and it turned
out that his truck had an emergency cut-off switch
that had been tripped. Before I drop $220.00 does
anyone know whether or not the Dakota has one as well, and if so where?

Has your truck ever been run completely out of gas? My wife's uncle is a DC mechanic, and almost every fuel pump he has seen go bad has been run out of gas at some point in it's life.

I just bought the truck about 3 months ago, so I
really don't know. I tried to go cheap at first and changed the fuel filter hoping I'd get lucky, but no such luck.

I have a '97 3.9L, I have noticed in the past month or so my truck his turning over a lot when I start it, could this be a sign of my fuel pump going bad?? Also, how can I check to make sure before I replace it?

tater, u can see if the fuel pressure is bleeding off pressure by hooking up a fuel pressure guage to the port on the fuel rail. turn the key on, dont start it and see what the pressure goes to, it should go to right around 48-50 psi, then see how fast it drops. if its excessive then the pump needs to be replaced. that can cause hard starting on alot of occasions.

Wow, lots of questions on this one. And old ones at that!
1: If you run your tank dry or low all the time, you seriously shorten the pump life. The gas actually cools the pump!
2: Up here in Ontario, people with DC vehicles have been replacing alot of pumps if they use alot of Shell gas. Shell says they have "fixed" the gas now.
3: There is no fuel pump inertia sw. on Daks. that I know of.
4: Alan, your truck should "turn over" on the starter with or with out the fuel pump working. Check the neutral safety sw. ( quick test-see if it starts in neutral), for power to the starter ( bad cables/wiring) and the starter. ( the solenoid contacts are notoriously bad for wearing out in the ND starters- cheap to fix if you can find the contacts)(don't blame the wife!)
5: best of luck!

Is it normal for a fuel pump to go out on
a 2001 Dodge Dakota truck with 41,000 miles?
Ours did, $500 later.

Hey Kari, no I don't think it is normal. You should not have to put that kind of money in a truck with only 41k on it. O by they way My 2000 QC 5.9 46k lift me on the side of the road tonight. AT first it was hard to start and the dealer told me it might be the fuel pump. After what it did tonight, I would say yep it's the fuel pump. This is not right and I will not stop writing DC until I get some answers. Its about 10 guys on here with the same problem......
