This is really bugging me. I changed my own oil for the first time in this truck two days ago. 15 miles later, my Check Engine light came on. I took it to AutoZone and they hooked it up to their reader thingy and it came up with a message about emissions. They said it could be any of 10 things, but is most commonly a loose gas cap...well the cap ain't loose. The truck had "Mopar" oil in it from the dealer. I changed it to 4 quarts of Castrol GTX 10w30 oil with a Fram oil filter. Anyone have any ideas? Should I just ignore it??

The truck is a 2001 Dakota Sport with a 2.5 Magnum.

Unplug the rear upper plug on the PCM for about 1 minute then plug it back in. The MIL should be out for a while. Mine comes on every 15,000 miles or so and the dealer has replaced the BatTempSens about 47 times because they claim that's what it is.

I think it's buggy software. Prolly a MS product;)

a lot of guys on here have had the same problem with the loose gas cap thing and it usualy turns out to be that a seal in the cap has failed and is allowing the vacuum in the tank to release and cause a MIL (check engine) to trigger. try to reset the pcm by disconnecting the battery for a while, then before restarting the engine borrow a gas cap from some one with the ssame truck you have, (not neccessarily the same year/model but the same generation,) and see if the light stays out. If it does, there is your culprit.
Amazing the things you can find out on here just by reading all the posts that come up!

Thanks for the recommendations guys. I'll look into it. I'm not sure how to disconnect the PCM, much less where it is, as I have no owner's manual or any books. I'll disconnect the battery and try what Slopehead desribed. Thanks again!

slopehead is right for once (kidding). I had code for moderate leak in eap. syst., p0442 I think. Turned out to be a split hose on the charcoal canister on the frame rail. I cut it back and reinstalled, reset comp. and all set. I read that someone else had similar problem on this site.

Grr...It's not the gas cap. I though resetting the computer would help...it did for about 5 miles but it came back on. When I started it this morning I thought I smelled gas, but it may have been my imagination. Could someone tell me where I can find some pics of the stuff I need to check and point it out to me? I have no idea where this stuff is...guess I'm in it for the show. ;)

Oh yeah. My oil pressure gauge is hovering right around the low mark. Just above the mark. Is that where it should be, or is there a possibility that it's where my problem is?

Unless you have repaired the failure, resetting your check engine lamp can be a bad thing. When you do that, you can lose some valuable information sometimes needed for real diagnostic work.
Never, ever ignore your check engine light. Even though most often it is a pissy annoying failure, sometimes it is a preliminary indicator to what could later be a high dollar failure. Have it diagnosed.
