Has anyone ever replaced the front wheel bearings on a 2WD 2000 dak? Mine started making noises so I decided to replace them. Come to find out that you have to buy the hub and bearings as a kit. I couldn't buy just the bearings. Anyone have this problem? I hate the fact that I might have to spend $150 per side just to change the bearings. Thanks for the input.

Yeah, I replaced on at 35,000 miles.

Luckily, warranty covered it. Price would have been $485.00 canadian.

If they go bad they make a roaring noise. That's what mine was doing. Took hubs off to inspect bearings and one of the bearings had no grease and had a few nicks. Don't know how it happened, but that's what caused the roaring noise.

Can you repack them? It's a messy job, but not at all difficult. Maybe a junk yard could pull one for you.

I bought semi-synthetic grease for $3. It's worth a try.

They're sealed bearings. You have to replace the whole thing. Mine started making noise at 78k and I had it replaced. You're looking at about $150-200/wheel. I had other service done at the same time so I don't recall exact price.

Careful guys if gotanRT or jasonB reads this they will rip you for snivielling about repairs on your truck and not doing preventative maintainence on your rigs that would prevent all repairs! FYI they are full of sht.

Easy to replace. You will need the right size hub socket, any parts store will allow you to go out to your dak, pop the center cap and verify the correct sixe. To loosen the hub nut, leave the truck on the ground, much easier, and you may need a nice size breaker bar to help you along the way. Once you have the nut loose, jack up, remove tire, and finsh unscrewing the nut. Whenthe nut is off, pull the whol assembly off. Wipe clean, layer on some grease, put new on, and tork to specs. That is it. BTW, you can find the bearings by themselves, w/o the whole assembly. It may take some looking around, but over half of the price for both sides vs one whole hub. Any shop like a NAPA will press out, and press in new bearings. good luck

Even if you could,I wouldn't advise trying to find the correct bearings and replacing them yourself. They are sold as an assy for a reason. The hub is machined after assy as a unit to eliminate any runout.

I just replaced mine, and you can have a parts store or a bearing specialist find a set of sealed bearings to fit, but I reccomend replacing the hub. THe front hub bearing can be removed, but the back one has to be pressed out. I had my front right hub replaced for $142. Sucks, but I gotta have em.

My front passenger side bearing is shot.. I went to Autozone, and they sold me the inner and outer bearings and the seal. I haven't replaced them yet because the repair manual says to replace the whole assembly. That bites!! The bearings only cost about $10 each and with the seal, a total of $24.00 compared to $140 for the whole assembly. I need some sound advice... btw this is the first time I have had to replace the bearings and my dak has 174,000 miles on it.

Cheryl, the manual will instruct you to spend the most money. I replaced just the bearings on mine, and have been running strong since. Just take you hub assemblys to a shop like Napa to have them pressed out, and new ones pressed in. Good luck

I have a 2003 Dakota, and the right front wheel bearing(s) are shot - anybody hear of any defect problems with this?

Had an accident, hit on the right front. Insurance not enough damage to cause the bearing to go bad, dealer says has to be the accident.

Anyone know the BCA or National P/N's for the bearing and seals for the front hubs. I have 108K on my 00 CC and I am going to do the brakes and ball joints in a week or two. Figured that I might as well do the front hub bearings while I have everything torn apart. Better than finding out the hard way 60 miles from no where.

When we had the oil changed on our 2003 Dakota which has 156,000 miles on it. They told us that the passenger front wheel bearing was going bad wasn't bad then and it still don't make any noise and you can let go of the steering wheel and it still holds straight. The only thing outside of general maintenance that we have done to our Dak. is a new water pump and serpentine belt. Can anyone tell me if there are any other ways to know if the wheel bearing is going?
