Wouldn't a busted axle make a crap load of noise all the time not when its just turning????? I'm not really sure but it could be the bearing.

Had a similar problem with my 01 recently when a carrier clip shattered. It can create some play on turns...had to replace carrier and bearings.

If it had a busted axel you would be able to grab the tire and pull the hole assembly right out when jacked up. Your truck may have a limited slip rear, and the popping is the clutches in the unit slipping then grabbing when cornering. The c-clips are the only thing that holds the axel in, and if you break an axel you would know it.
