Ok, here's the deal. I'm a college student and I drive a Honda CRX. It's a rather small car but it serves it's purpose for being in college; it's small, quick, good MPG, and all that good stuff. But I think it's time to go and all you guys are showing me the light of the Dakota.

Is the 4.7 much more powerful than the 3.6? I wouldnt' mind getting the V-6 but the V-8 would be very nice too if it was applicable. I wont be towing much except possibly my dad's old pop-up camper. Could the V-6 handle that?

I guess my only question is how different are the two. Hopefully you guys can help a young Honda boy like me.

Theres a huge difference I think. The v6 gets
around the same mpg as the V8. You get a ton
of more power with the v8. Also if your gonna
get a truck and there is a V8 available GET IT!!!
You will be alot happier with the 8. Also these
engines will be pretty crazy when all the
aftermarket goddies come out. My 4 cents!

I used to have a '94 Dakota regular cab V6 with the 5 speed, and It was great 99% of the time. The only time that I wished that I had more power was when I towed a friend's 69 Camaro from central California to El Paso. If you're interested in a club cab or quad cab, or if you're thinking about 4WD, get a V8 if you can afford it. With the extra weight of 4WD or the club or quad cabs, the V8 would feel much better. There's only a relatively small mileage penalty by going with the V8 (2-3 mpg), and the 4.7 V8 is a $590 option (over the cost of the V6), so it's really not that much more than the V6. I was very happy with my old reg cab V6, but I'm glad that I got the 4.7 V8 since I opted for the extended cab and 4WD this time around. It boils down to personal choice and what you're going to use the truck for.

I went thru college with a geo metro. you may want to finish school firt and then get a truck since then u will probably have a good paying job. I hope you don't think i am overstepping my boudaries by saying this but why go into debt and have higher car insurance and fuel bills while in school? Get a good job first then gat a dak with all the extras including the 4.7L v8.

Here's my school bus!

<-------------------

I'm finishing up high school right now and plan on driving this Dakota all the way through college. As a V6 owner, GET THE 4.7! I've only driven two 4.7 4x4's (one part-time the other AWD) and I'm impressed. I'm starting to save for either a Ram or a part-time 4WD Dakota, either with the 4.7 or the new 5.7 that might come out. The newer Dodge motors are a lot better on gas and power.

The V-6 will tow that tent camper anywhere in North America. Thats what I have, the 3.9 6 and it pulls 4700 lbs. without even squeeking. I used to have a rather large tent camper and fullt loaded it tipped the scales at 1900 so you will have plenty of power to do the job. My 3.9 gets 21 on the hiway and I really doubt from what I see on other posts that the v6 gets about the same mpg as Python said. 15-16 (some claim 17) ain't 21. Thats right on a 22 gallon club cab option tank I go 100 miles further.

Yeah... we'll see how REAL it is when it gets stuck in 6 to 8 inches of snow... You must be down South or out West where it is warm and sunny.

My 4x4 will be plodding along nicely while you are searchin' for sand to put under the wheels...HEH!

(This is just a joke... so don't get upset... Just kidding!)

Hey, don't wait to graduate. I am a Junior at the University of Arizona, and bought my 98 Dak 4x4 V8 last summer. Yeah, I am working more hours to afford the payments, gas and maintanence, but there is no reason you couldn't do it too. I had to have one after driving my friend's.

Hey Big Daddy,
No one has mentioned the most obvious fact as I saw it. When you purchase a V8 Rig (for an additional $590 as mentioned above) you get thousand of dollars of upgrades included. For instance, the tranny is straight from the RAM, the brakes are the largest diameter, the driveshaft, not to mention things such as oil cooler, etc. It's a no brainer in my opinion. I own a '97 318 4X4 and love it. The truck will pull 2.5 tons without a sweat and rock and roll when I kick it down to pass someone. Oh, did I mention that V6s really sound like a cow in the pasture when you really listen to them :-}
