Hey everybody-
I know this question has be asked a lot of times, I searched and found 1101 topics. I read a lot of those and tried to pull the codes with the on/off trick, but didn't get any codes to show up in the odometer.

I have a 1997 Dodge Dakota Sport V6, 5spd. Can I pull the codes from my year of truck? The dealer wants $100 just to pull the codes and tell me whats wrong. I plan on fixing the problem myself I just want to know how to pull the codes from my 1997 Dakota.

Please help and not by saying search the archives because I have. Maybe just a better explanation of how to pull the codes from a 97'. Thanks for the help everybody.

I got the same truck and here is what you do. Start by holding down the trip button. Keep holding it and turn the key to acc. on (don't actually start the truck, just so the radio and fan work). Keep holding the trip button for about 5-10 seconds. Watch your odometer. "CHEC" should appear in the digital odometer along with any fault codes. The last fault code will then appear (999) and that indicates that it is don't scanning the computer. Press the trip once more and your truck should run through some calibration steps with the guages and show you all the dash lights that are working. Good luck. Hope nothing major is wrong.

IN the USA versions it is:
1, insert key
2, turn key to on postion .
3, turn key off.
4, turn key on.
5, turn key off.
6, turn key on.
7, codes if any show up in odometer window.
8, code 55 means end of message.
In the USA what the canuk is saying checks out the dash for proper operation but does not check PCM codes.
Just a month or 2 ago someone posted all the codes under the heading "Chrysler Codes" do a search to find it.
This method is good for the 97's but I know it changed for the newer models, just not sure what year!
