 Subject: Yakima Roof Rack

I would like to mount Yakima roof rack rails to the top of my 2001 QC so as to use all of the Yakima stuff I already own. Anyone know the location of mounting holes so I don't end up drilling into the middle of a stiffener or something? Yakima is no help.

Somewhat curious. I had a Yakima rack on my Toyota pickup for 8 years. Based upon the type of roof we had, the rack did not require any drilling. Is it not possible to do the same with your new quad-cab?
I will be interested in what you learn/decide; as we may yet put a rack on our new QC.

The Quad Cab has no rain gutters. If you want to avoid drilling you have to use the towers that sit on the paint and clamp in the door openings, virtually guaranteeing paint damage. I could put gutter simulators on the cap, but then the kayak would hang 6'-7'out the back making it an "over length vehicle" on the ferries. Using the blind fasteners with fixed rails on the cab roof makes the most sense.

The tower rack you described is exactly what we had on our Toyota. Several times a year I removed the rack and waxed the roof (and rack). Suprisingly, the roof paint never did scratch; although I did get some rubbing where the rack clamped to the door opening.
Based upon my previous experience, I would not hesitate to put same type of rack on my Dakota. My only regret is selling the rack with the Toyota...
