Subject: what in the world controls the cooling f

I'm having trouble tracking down the cause of my engine light coming on. I have a code p1481 (If I remember right) it says to check the fan relay and other related items. I found the relay half melted and the socket damaged. The fan has messed up and kept running until I unhooked the battery a couple of times, but that was a year ago. Repaired that and swaped relays, still the code. I have 12v. at the relay, and when I short across the socket, the fan runs. What exactly controls the fan relay? If is's the temp sensor, why is my temp gauge working? I'd apreciate any thoughts. Thanks, Larry 2000 4.7 5 speed 3.92

So after swapping the fan relay, the fan works properly? The check engine light will have to be reset by the dealer (or if you have access to certain types of ECU programmers, you can reset it yourself), it won't just shut off once the problem is fixed.

Hi Wolf, Thanks for your reply. The only time I've seen the fan come on is when I jump across the two terminals on the relay socket. I've tryed reseting the engine light by disconecting the battery cable and turning the ignition on for awhile, that didn't seem to work. I still have the light and the code. I have unpluged other sensors just to see what would show up and unhooking the batt eraced them. I'm thinking whatever controls the fan messed up causing the fan to run all the time and overheated the relay. Just don't know what to check next.
