 Subject: Rattle when AC is on

I have a '99 CC with 3.9 AT. When my truck is at idle with the AC on it makes a hell of a lot of racket. I turn AC off and the noise goes away. Any Ideas? I did a search and I cannot find any previous questions relating to this. Thanks.

Clutch fan, alternator, belt? any of these? any suggestions? AC and truck seem to run fine, just noisy, kinda like a diesel sounds when I park my dak and have the AC blowing. Let me hear some ideas.

its the serpetnine belt, buy a mopar one and it will stop, afdtermarket did not cut it, i thought it was my tensioner, but it was just the belt...

I have the same rattle with when the AC is on, I did replace my belt tensioner since that was definitely bad, and when i replaced the belt I used a mopar, so I believe what we have is a AC clutch problem possibly.

OK, I think I am getting somewhere with this. I did another round of analyzing this noise tonight and this is what I came up with in part with everyones replys.
When AC is off everything sounds/appears normal. When AC is ON at idle a rattle sound appears and also some slight chirping sound that appears to be intermittent. ALSO, the serp belt appears to move back and forth alot more with the AC on (this is between the tensioner pulley and the very bottom one). When I put it in gear (Load on it?) with the AC on the chirping has now turned to more of a squeal, the rattle is still there and the belt is really moving back and forth, probably twice as much as with just the AC on.
The serpentine belt is only about a year old and looks fine (was replaced by a mechanic with the water pump) but it is not mopar. According to my Haynes manual the tensioner pulley is not adjustable but appears to be within specs if i am reading it right (not totally sure though). So I am thinking this aftermarket belt is just too damn loose when the AC is on and especially under load.
I guess I should try a mopar belt first. then tensioner pulley if that doesn't do it. What do you all think?

I think you're right on track with your troubleshooting, I would definently rip out that belt and put a new one on.

Mine has had the rattle for the last 100,000 miles.
Sounds like a jackhammer running under the hood at stop lights.
I have had 3 serpentine belts on with no difference. It's been like this since it was new.
It's a '98 2wd cc 318. When I bought it the dealer said if the cold air quits coming out, to bring it back while still under warrenty. I still get cold air 5 years later, and the same damn rattle.
I'm about to change out the compressor.

Funny I see this, I was waiting int he bay to give the dealer my truck for front end repairs, and it got hot so I turn on my A/C and I heard the same thing, looks like I will be taking it back once again (5 times in 5 months already!!!!)
