Im looking into getting the 1.7 roller rockers, and I have a lot of lifter noise. How much extra work would it be to replace the lifters at the same time as the rockers? Thanks!

If you plan on doing the lifters-- here's some things that'll be coming off the truck--

you'll need to remove the intake manifold to get into the oil valley, to remove the lifters. This involves removing the Alt, swinging the AC out of the way (if you have AC)-- removing the Alt/AC bracketry-- draining the coolant-- removing the water pump by-pass hose-- pulling off the fuel rails (or removing the fuel line on the driver's side-- which is actually easier)-- pulling all the wiring associated with the TB/injectors, and vaccuum lines. From there, it's a the lifter 'spyder' that holds the lifter keeps in place (this is all after you've removed the valve covers, and pulled off the stock rockers, to remove the pushrods)--- soak the new lifter in oil over night-- install with the oiling holes toward the exhaust manifold side-- put everything back together---

:)

Did this 3 weeks ago.

Fun Fun.

After all of that, installing the rolling rockers is a breeze. :)

How many miles on your truck? If more than 50k-- do the lifters... without a doubt.

I sell Crower lifters, Crower rockers-- With the Crower rockers you'll need taller valve covers to clear the new ARP studs-- or, modify your stock covers... I have both-- plus powder coated to your chose on the stock modified covers.

One more thing, change the plenum gasket while everything is apart. Even if you think it is not leaking, change it. You'll be glad you did.

Ive got about 72,000 on the engine, and the number 5 cylinder is making a lot of noise. Im not a mechanic (yet, anyway), so Im not really comfortable doing this myself. Can you guesstimate the labor on this project? Im sure this takes a good while to do. Thanks a lot!

A shop could charge anywhere from $500- up for something like this.

It really isn't that bad--- Where are you located??? It just takes time-- and in a mechanics shop-- time is $$$$.

What kinda noise is #5 making??? Could it be an injector??? Before you get into the motor -- pull the driver's side valve cover and take a look at things (#5 especially)--- you might have a bent pushrod or something .... Do a visual-- you could start it, but the oil will flow/squirt all over quickly-- but you might see something (that's causing the noise).

Its making a tapping noise, just like practically every other 3.9 on earth. Its much louder than the others cylinders on the truck. It sounds like its right under the valve cover. Its not a piston knock or anything like that. I learned what that sounded like out of my '91 dodge dynasty, god rest her ;( rtdkota, feel free to email me. I talked to someone pretty recently at socaldakota.com about getting a used v8 TB, maybe it was you. Anyway, the noise is just a fairly loud tapping noise, its only audibly noticable with the hood up, so I cant really tell if it goes away after it gets hot or anything like that. Ill check that tomorrow. It does speed up with the engine though, so thats why i was thinking it was valve train related. Thanks!

** Finishing my statement above...

It does speed up with the engine though, so thats why i was thinking it was valve train related, or possibly the lifters. Will I lose any oil from taking the cover off, or does it settle into the engine down past the cover?

oil will not spill when you take off the valve cover.
