Subject: Evaporative System and Smog Test
IP: Logged

Message:
I keep getting an error code P0455 indicating a large evaporative leak. I checked all the hoses and they look fine and since it doesn't seem like a big deal, I want to put off taking it in the shop to run a smoke test (lack of funds).

I need to go in for an inspection which calls for a smog test. Will this supposed leak have any effect on the smog test (emissions)? Oh yeah, it is Massachusetts emissions which is the same standard as Cali.

Check your gas cap. I'm not sure what code comes up but it will throw a code if it is not on tight.

Had the same problem. The inside of the gas cap was corroded and would not seal the system properly.
Get a new cap at AutoZone for $8, problem solved.
Don't forget to reset the computer.

DON'T reset the PCM before a smog test you won't pass

If you have aftermarket headers...its possible some of the hoses may be dried out or cracked or even on mine the hard plastic line that runs behind the driver's side was melted closed from the header so check the lines near your headers to make sure the line hasn't melted. I was throwing the same code and couldn't find the leak till I looked back and saw it. If you find something definate then goto the dodge place and have them clear the codes w/ the DRB...doesn't reset the pcm just erases codes. If there's still a problem it'll come back almost w/in a minute of clearing them.

You can also check underneath there is a black canister near the gas tank that is part of the Evap system make sure all the plastic lines haven't slipped off.

Sorry for the long post, hope this helps.

When the light first came on and I found out the code, I immediately bought a new gas cap and reset the PCM. No luck, the light still comes on. I guess my question now...will it pass the smog test with the check engine light on, and is it safe to drive around on it? I'm assuming it is since I've already made a 400 mile trip with it on. The only danger I can think of is gas fumes when parked, but I do no park in a garage, nor do I ever let the truck idle. THanks
