HI- Does anyone know if a bad cat. converter would have anything to do with gas mileage? I'm pretty sure that the one on my 97 is going, because when i'm sitting at a red light or in traffic or something the truck sounds like a disel. My friend and i have traced the noise to the converter. And when I hit the thing it makes a "clanking" sound. Every now and then it'll smell like rotten eggs, too. And since I've noticed this, I've gotten crap gas mileage. Just wondering if anybody has any ideas. Also how much a new one would go for. Thanks
mike

I think most metal objects make a clanking sound when you hit them... It shouldnt sound like a diesel, but it should stink, if it was bad.

Mike-

Sounds like your cat is going out. Mine when out when my 1997 had about 40,000 miles on it. The dealer replace it for free. If you are under 70,000 miles they have to replace it for free, otherwise it will cost you an arm and a leg to get it done at a muffler shop.

But you could always go with a highflow cat from Jeg's or Summit. Your choice. Hope this info helps.

I'm starting to build my own custom exhaust for my 99 x-cab 318 3in.body and 33's and was wandering if removing my caty would efect the computer on the truck because of the 02 sensor behind it. I plan on puting the sensor back in just eliminating the caty. I'm not worried about emmisions here in hick ville PA.

Hey OffRoad, check out your owners manual you will find that the converter and only the converter must be replaced for free up to 80,000 mi. I assume that was just a missed keystroke and that is what you ment to say. HEhehehe

Bert, I put an offroad x-pipe on my mustang which does not have cats and has an O2 sensor both in front and behind the cat. Mustang owners have to install MIL eliminators to "trick" the computer into thinking the cat is still there or the computer would turn the check engine light on and would run very rough. Don't know how it does it but it works. Also, you will get a very strong unburned gas smell without the cats and if the engine runs rich, which it does like all dodges, it will be bad. A high flow cat still passes emissions, smells good and only looses 2-5 hp compared to an offroad exhaust. Spend the money and you will be happier. I am in the process in figuring out how to replace mine on my 5.9 QC when I put the headers on it. Short on cash now so may have to wait.

thanks aggie97 will a high flow cat still give me the crisp sound of an old v-8 with a pair of glasspacks or will it sound like the new generation motors and just have a deep rumble like stock but only louder?

Bert, when I put the catback on my truck, I started it and ran it for a minute or so with no muffler and just the cat. Thought it would be loud but actually really wasn't. It did sound very strong though. As for a highflow with glasspacks, I could not tell you what it would soundlike. Personally, I cannot stand the sound of glasspacks. I really like a strong mellow and semi-loud sound which is what the gibson gave me and I am happy. As for what it will sound like, I don't know what engine you have but I am going to try and get a wav. file of mine to see what it really sounds like outside of the truck. I would guess that the 5.9L and a 4.7L will sound much different. go to http://blackdakrt.com/mpegs.html and listen to some of the exhausts. Different brands and some really cool mpegs. The Blue R/T with powerdyne leaving is very cool. Pick one you like and keep in mind that most all chambered exhausts will drone the hell out of you on the highway. I have some mac flowpaths on my stang and they drive me nuts. Hoping to swap to a dynomax soon. the gibson on the truck sounds like it is there but does not drone at all.

Good luck

Glasspacks always sound different on whatever car/truck u put them on but with a 5.9 it sounds sweet...it also depends on which war u mount the exhaust....
