Hey this is a great site for finding out about dakotas the people here are very cool... I was noticing some of the new 4x4's are a couple of inches higher than other 4x4's which themselves are a few inches higher than non 4x4 models. The taller trucks look so awesome with the 265 tires... my question is what is the penalty for going with the taller 4x4 because even though it looks awesome and capable for offroad, in reality the truck will be used for commuting on the freeway 90% of the time... Does the ride suffer considerably with the taller truck? Does the suspension wear out quicker? Any thoughts will be appreciated!!!

well the obvious is higher center of gravity, which means more body roll in every direction, not to mention a few more inches to climb up after a good workout in the squat rack (even 2x4s are painful sometimes). As far as suspension wear, the technology is there, i cant see dodge offereing a vehicle that will wear balljoints in only a few thousand kilometers...ahem!...But the real question you have to ask yourself is do i need 4x4, Im sure many will agree that a LSD rearend will suit you just fine.

i installed a bodylift, so suspension is still stock. same ride quality, just a few inches taller.

as far as ball joints, that comes ionto play if you change rims and have a very different backspacing.

OK...thanks for the feedback so far... I test drove the quad cab 4x4 (awd) 4.7 sport plus and it is sweet...I'm pretty impressed with the handling around corners considering were talking about a truck thats kinda high up there. As far as the ride I could really feel the bumps on the bad stretch of road I drove on... I can accept the bumpier ride quality thats inherent with the raised truck...I guess I'm still trying to find an answer whether the stiffer ride of the raised dakota (straight from dealer) will cause more $$$ down the line due to wear and tear as compared to the non 4x4. Probably a non issue--- Right?

Yeah, I don't *need* a 4x4...but I still want one! My friends say most people in midlife crises go for the 2door ragtop lol... but in any case the dakota 4x4's what I want and just want to make sure about it before I go for it!
