I HAVE A 1997 REGULAR CAB DAKOTA. MY QUESTION IS, HOW DO THE GRILLS COME OUT TO REPLACE THE SPEAKERS? DO THEY JUST PULL OUT, OR IS THERE A SCREW WHICH I CAN'T SEE? THANK YOU!!!

I have a 98 RC.
The grills in the doors and the side panels are molded in. What you have to do is pull the door panel off and replace them from behind.

More specifically remove the T-15 (I think) torx screw behind the door handle on the inside of the door panel, also remove the Phillip’s screw at the top of the door above the power window knob, then take out the 3 Phillips screws at the bottom of the door panel.

Now, pull the door panel up slightly and pull it gently outward (lock the door lock to make it come out easier), when you have the top out 3"-4"'s away from the door then you need to reach in and push the top speed clip of the power window mechanism. More clearly what I'm trying to say is to reach in between the door and door panel while it is only 3-4"'s and reach to where the power window and door lock plastic panel is, on top of that there is a metal clip to push down on to make it pop out. Pull the module out and disconnect it from the wiring harness if you can, if not twist it sideways and push it back into the door. Disconnect the other wiring harnesses to the power windows and any other's you see.

Now, you need to disconnect the door handle assembly from the push rod that opens the door. To do this you need to look into the whole that the power window/lock grouping used to be in, you will see the pushrod going to the door handle. There is a clip that rides on the pushrod, it needs to be pushed toward the door (off of the rod), once it's off the rod then you will be able to push the rod up and out of the door handle assembly, you may need to wiggle the door handle (on the inside) while doing this.

Walla, now you should be able to remove the door panel. Your speaker should be exactly 6.5"s and is held in with 3 screw's. Replace the speaker and enjoy. Crutchfield sells wiring adapters (actually give them to you if you buy speakers from them) for your aftermarket speakers. If you don't have these you need a multimeter to figure out which is the positive wire and which is the negative (I forget).

When you reassemble the door there are 3 plastic "holders" on the bottom of the door panel. These slide into the factory holes in the door and help align everything. Save your window/door lock box for last (but pull the harness through), connect the other wiring harness connectors and then put the door lock back in place. Now push the panel against the door and lift the panel up over the lip of the door and pop it down into place. Now get the pushrod for the door opening and rotate that clip back away from the rod, let the rod drop into the hole in the plastic connector, then rotate the plastic clip back onto the rod.

Reconnect the power window/lock assemble to the harness, drop the bottom of it in first then snap the top of the harness into place. Put the torx screw in behind the door handle, then the top screw above the power window knob, then the 3 screws on the bottom of the door.

These are rough instructions but I think you will get the feel for it as you go. Remember NOT to force anything, make sure not to break anything, especially the door pushrod connector.

Hope this helps,
Shawn
