Subject: Stereo Amp Power Cable--Where to Run?
IP: Logged

Message:
For those of you who have added a stereo system to a late model Dakota, including an amplifier, where did you route your power cable? It needs to get from the battery into the cab and the amplifier. I briefly inspected the firewall from the engine side and nothing was obvious. So, how do you do it?

Thanks!

Dan R.

I made a tiny slit where the main harness goes through, in the rubber seal and fed it through. I believe it was below and towards the drivers side of the brake booster. Then behind the kick panel and under the sill trim. Then it depends on where the amp is mounted.

I used the same grommet as Geoff... I looked

Don't you hate when you tell people your name is Geoffrey and they automatically spell it with a J? If when you say "it's Geoffrey with a G"? I do!

Dude , I went through the passenger side. There was a plug going out to the engine compartment I even usued 1/0 welding cable.I routed it under the carpet where nobody could step on it. Have a friend shine a flashlight under the hood close to the firewall lay on your back in the passenger seat with your head under the glovebox. you'll see it. Good Luck. Ride Safe , Ride Fast!

Where is the best ground wire location for the amp? On the seat bolt, or drill a hole in the floor? Where did you guys mount your ground? Also, where did you mount the power wire, to the battery terminal, or in the power distribution box?

Grounded to the seat bolt , scrape the paint first! I ran the power cable to the battery. NEVER go to the fuse box! An amp demands to much power!

Sorry, I didnt mean inside the fuse box. I meant where the positive wire from the battery connects onto a stud and is held with a nut in the power distribution center under the hood. It looks like an easy place to secure a ring terminal for the amp power wire. Any difference if I run the power wire here instead of the battery terminal?

OH o.k . It may not hurt , but since you are that close to the battery anyway, I'd play it safe and use the battery. With all the electronic stuff in vehicles these days , I just don't know what could happen. You can get all kindes of connectors to make wiring to the battery a piece of cake. Good luck!
